Megamarsch Training Series:

I have created a Megamarsch training series on Hiking Buddies. The links can be found below. The training prepares you from a moderate 30 km walk all the way to 75 km.

  1. Stage 1 (app 30 km): Ammersee half
  2. Stage 1A (app 35 km): Staffelsee and Riegsee loop
  3. Stage 1B (app 35 km): Kochel am See to Walchensee
  4. Stage 2 (app 40 km)Munich to Starnberg
  5. Stage 3A (app 50 km)Ammersee loop (with less elevation)
  6. Stage 3B (app 50 km)Ammersee loop (with elevation)
  7. Stage 4 (app 65 km)Munich to Benediktbeuern
  8. Stage 5 (app 75 km)Kochel to Munich

Helpful Tips:

Here are some important points based on my experience preparing for the Megamarsch.

  1. After trying multiple shoes, I can confirm that trail running shoes are the best for this event. Please buy something that has very good cushioning like Hoka or Brooks shoes (not sponsored!).
  2. Blister protection is a must. Please buy plasters or oxide tapes and tape them on the "hot spots" of your feet even before you get blisters. Each person walks differently and the training series above is meant to help you identify these "hot spots". Typical "hot spots" are your pinky toe, heels and your forefoot.
  3. Double-layered socks help prevent friction on the feet and can prevent blisters.
  4. I found that consuming sugary treats like Haribos are very helpful for such long walks. Chocolates are not recommened as they can upset your stomach. Magnesium will be highly beneficial.
  5. Stretching every 15-20 km can significantly help with pain.
  6. Based on my experience, these long walks are more of a mind-game. Having a walking partner/ partners can significantly help you. The main aim of this event is to create such a group.
