Hi,
I am planning to take advantage of the great weather tomorrow to get some vertical training in after a long hiatus. I'll be testing a new winter ascent gear and exploring the conditions at altitude. It’s short notice, but feel free to join if you around!
Plan:
The Approach: Klais → Elmau (Flat warm-up).
The Grind: Elmau → Schachenhaus (Steady 10km forest road climb, ~900m gain).
Optional Summit Push: Depending on snow stability and weather at 1 PM, I’m looking to push for Frauenalpl (+330m gain) to hit that 2,200m mark.
Note: The Schachenhaus is closed, so this is a self-sufficient mission!
Timing:
Start: Meeting at Klais Station at 06:44 AM (RB6 from Munich).
Return: Aiming to catch the 07:27 PM train back from
Gear & Weather Update for Friday
Gear: Crampons, poles and Iceaxe (optional for summit push)
Temps: Sunny/18°C in the valley; 0°C to 2°C at 2,000m.
Conditions: Expect "rotten" (soft) snow after midday. Crampons/spikes are essential for the morning ice, but be prepared for heavy slush on the way down.
Reminder: Pack plenty of water and snacks as all mountain huts on these routes are currently in their winter/maintenance closure.
