Description

Dear hiking buddies, the snow is gone, the Swiss national park is open, it's time for Macun Lakes.

Wanderrouten und Zustand - Schweizerischer Nationalpark

We walk up through the forest and then later at the mountainside, with great views at the surrounding mountains and the national parc. Then we reach a plateau with many little lakes and stay there for a while.

Afterwards down on the other side and finish at the station of Lavin.

The hike is weather dependant. If there is rain or thunderstorm I have to cancel and postpone it.

Time Frame:

09:30 meet and start (train from Zürich HB leaving at 07:08, change only one time in Chur)

1'550 height meters, makes around 4 hours walking up

13:30 - 14:30 lunch break somewhere on the plateau

18:30-19:30 back at Lavin station.

Trains to Zürich takes 2.5 hours and leaves at 18:31, 18:52, 19:31, 19:52

Meeting point:

Hike:

The hike is not easy, it has 1'580 height meters up, 1'620 m down and 21.6 km length (8h according with Swisstopo, without considering the breaks).

The beginning is easy to walk, then there is a zig-zag at the mountain side, but not steep.

The high-alpine hike begins at Plan Sech and climbs up to the lake plateau, situated at over 2,700 meters above sea level. The last 200 height meters is walking on stones, no climbing, still T3, but also not for absolute beginners. This trail past 23 mountain lakes is physically demanding, long, and requires sure-footedness and a good head for heights.

Optional shuttle service:

The Macun Shuttle (also known as the Alpentaxi) is a privately operated shuttle service that significantly shortens the steep ascent to the famous Macun Lakes (Lais da Macun) in the Swiss National Park.
Route and Time Saved
  • Starting point: The shuttle departs directly from Zernez railway station.
  • Drop-off point: It takes you up to the tree line at "Plan Sech" (2,200 m above sea level).
  • Time saved: Taking the shuttle saves you about 1.5 to 2.5 hours of steep hiking and roughly 700 meters of elevation gain through the forest.
Essential Booking Info
  • Reservation required: The shuttle does not run on a fixed public schedule. It operates strictly on prior reservation.
  • Operator: The service is managed by the Hotel a la Staziun in Zernez.
  • Contact: You can book your ride by calling +41 79 103 20 20.

Picnic:

Picnic on the top.

Equipment:

There are no mountain huts or restaurants along the way, so you must bring your own food, water, weather and skin protection.
