Description

This ridgeline is a sort of no man’s land, right on the border with Austria. We will be staying on the German side, but because of this the area is generally under-explored. There are no huts around, and only few paths. This should be a good way of escaping the coronavirus, and finding some stunning autumn views.

I don’t know exactly what the snow situation will be, but if the path gets too dangerous then of course we will reroute or turn back. However, I strongly recommend walking poles and spikes, so we can move more easily on the snow where it is passable.

This is a reasonably long day given the possibility of snow, and so you should only sign up if you have experience of walking in the Alps in snow before.

I am bringing a stove, and can boil water for anyone who wants some at lunch/in breaks. Please bring water, tea bags etc. if you’d like.

Good to know

Kit list

This is what I am bringing; your kit list should be similar.

  • hiking boots
  • gaiters
  • spikes (Grödel) or crampons
  • head torch
  • first aid kit, survival bag
  • snacks
  • lunch (no huts en route)
  • cash
  • more snacks
  • mask
  • water (2 ℓ)
  • Alpenverein membership, or similar insurance
  • walking poles (optional)
  • waterproofs (jacket, trousers, bag cover/liner)
  • warmth (fleece)
  • woolly hat, gloves
  • towel (for swimming, or for hitch-hiking if things go very wrong)
  • sunglasses (I’m an optimist)
  • ID card
  • phone (please save my number +44 7883 182257/WhatsApp/Facebook Messenger), extra battery
  • map (downloaded to your phone with the route, e.g. with ViewRanger, or on paper)
  • mat to sit on (snow is cold)
  • stove and gas (I’m bringing this, so if you want a hot drink then please bring a teabag/coffee powder etc, and enough water to cover this. I can bring milk powder too if you let me know)

Safety

Please observe all laws and guidelines for preventing the spread of coronavirus, such as maintaining social distancing when on the mountain. I have created this event in order to find other people keen on walking in the mountains, but I am not a guide, and each member is responsible for their own safety. You are expected to familiarise yourself with the route before registering, and only register once you are happy that you can complete it.

Transport

This is a carpool event, so please see the carpool tab to register for a car and to find out when and where to meet. The parking should cost €5 for the day.

Due to COVID restrictions, if any other cars join, I will ask that they act as a bubble, and do the hike separately. As always, you are expected to be familiar with the route, so this other car can navigate without walking together with the first car.
