The Wilder Kaiser is a very impressive-looking mountain range right on the doorstep of Kufstein, the closest part of Austria by train. Scheffauer is perhaps its most prominent peak when viewed from Kufstein, so let’s go and climb it! There is a lake for a swim afterwards, Hintersteiner See.
This is an A/B via ferrata (Klettersteig) with a very high chance of rockfall. For this reason you must have a helmet with you, and I recommend a via ferrata set too. You must be comfortable with steep rocky ascents, and this is definitely not a beginner hike.
The route is described on the following websites:
Kit list
This is what I am bringing; your kit list should be similar.
Transport
We are taking the train from München Ostbahnhof, with a Guten Tag Ticket. We will share the cost of the ticket, which will be between €10 and €15 depending on the group size.
Outbound: Munich East 6:51 – 7:56 Kufstein.
Return: Kufstein – Munich East (hourly at approximately xx:58, taking around an hour).
We can shorten the route by 5 km (versus full route of 25 km) by descending to the B173 to the west of Hintersteiner See, and taking the bus from Söll Steinerne Stiege. This will cost €2.60 per person, and there are buses leaving at 13:45, 15:55 and 18:18. Alternatively, if there is no bus coming soon and we would rather not walk back, it will cost around €25 for a taxi.
Weather
The forecast currently looks good, but if there is the risk of rain on the day of the hike or shortly before, I will postpone or cancel the hike, because it will become too slippery.
Safety
Please observe all laws and guidelines for preventing the spread of coronavirus. I have created this event in order to find other people keen on walking in the mountains, but I am not a guide, and each member is responsible for their own safety. You are expected to familiarise yourself with the route before registering, and only register once you are happy that you can complete it.
There is the option to shorten this route by taking a bus or taxi back from Söll Steinerne Stiege, which will save 5 km of walking. Please see the transport section above.
