## Lake Bohinj Loop + Savica Waterfall Hike
One of the best day hikes in Slovenia, this route combines the peaceful shoreline of Lake Bohinj with the dramatic alpine scenery of Savica Waterfall inside Triglav National Park.
* Distance: ~20 km
* Time: 5–7 hours
* Difficulty: Moderate
* Elevation gain: ~350–450 m
* Route type: Loop
* Best start: Ribčev Laz
### The Experience
The hike begins at Ribčev Laz, the classic gateway to Lake Bohinj, where the stone bridge and church sit beneath the Julian Alps. Early morning is especially beautiful here, with mist hanging over the lake and calm reflections on the water.
The trail follows the quieter northern shore first, weaving through forest paths, lakeside meadows, and tiny wooden docks. This section feels wonderfully peaceful compared with nearby Bled. You’ll pass hidden swimming spots, crystal-clear water, and occasional openings with spectacular mountain views.
As you continue west toward Ukanc, the valley narrows and the scenery becomes more alpine. From Ukanc, the route climbs gently through shaded forest toward Savica Waterfall.
The final approach to Savica involves a staircase climb through beech forest before reaching the famous emerald waterfall bursting from a limestone cliff. The waterfall is deeply connected to Slovenian folklore and is one of the country’s most iconic natural landmarks.
After visiting Savica, the route returns along the southern side of the lake. This section is sunnier and offers broad panoramic views across the water toward the mountains. There are several good places to stop for food, coffee, or a swim before completing the loop back at Ribčev Laz.
