Description

Update: Shifting to Sat. 31.08.24

Hi, I would like to go to above-mentioned hiking and would be happy to make it together. If you want to join, pls. read below carefully)

A few highlights:

  • We meet in Hbf-Munich at 07:15 in front of platform 33.
  • The train RB55 to Bayrischzell departs at 7:30 at München Hbf platform 33.
  • This hike is not suitable for absolute beginners, as having some surefootedness is a must. There are a few somewhat exposed sections and possibly a bit of scrambling (not really difficult for experienced hikers with above the average fitness), but everything really challenging can be skipped or circumvented.
  • You should be able to keep a minimum pace of 350 m of gain per hour.
  • Use your own Deutschlandticket or check MVV for options.
  • I preserve the right to decide who may not join this hike.

Let’s enjoy together one of the most beautiful and diverse hikes in the Bayrischzell area! We start from Geitau and hike over to Birkenstein where we have a quick peek inside lush Birkenstein chapel.

From there we follow the stream up to Breitensteinfensterl and Breitenstein’s two peaks. After that, we can put in a quick refreshment stop at Hubertushütte.

From there on we cover several minor peaks before hiking down to Osterhofen.

The plan is to take the 4pm train back to Munich.

Half of the hike is through shadowy woods, the other half is exposed to the sun.

What to bring:

  • good mood 🙂
  • water and food for the whole day (2L+ of water recommended)
  • proper hiking shoes (ankle covering recommended)
  • cash for the hut
  • Optional:hiking poles (if you know how to use them)
  • Optional:sun and rain/wind protection
  • Optional: small towel, there’s a high chance we’ll cool our feet in one of the streams or the Kneippbecken in Osterhofen

+++++ Important: (Experience after doing successfully) ++++++ After I finished this route, I have to report that the way down from Spitzingalm, which is not marked in the app, if you select the original route (the part to descend the grass slope at beginning) is really uncomfortable. My Comoot app (as best possible route) suggested after a few hunderd meters descending through the small river, which was quite muddy and edgy on the sides, and full of water with rounded slippery stones in the river. The alternative route besides the river was grassy, muddy, and steep. Who ever, who want to repeat this route, should be aware and ready about this part (ca. 1 km altogether). Especial thanks to buddies, who made it successfully and with (luckily) no injuries :-)
