I try to run 5-6 times a week, mostly Zone 2 trainings. Interval training and hill repeats are important for speed. I run on tired legs for endurance, you use different muscles while tired. And, most importantly strength training(single leg and core exercises) and stretching to be injury-resistant. And, always simulate race terrain on real trails at weekends. It's fairly repetitive, unglamorous work but I do see positive results. There are also books, i.e. Training for the Uphill Athlete, Relentless Forward Progress which I look at from time to time.
