The "Wolfgangseer Schafberg" is one of the peaks with most beautiful view in Austria. Wherever you look, your eyes will be hit by the blue of alpine lakes on all sides. This mountain located in Salzburgerland is surrounded by three of the main lakes of the Salzkammergut: Wolfgangsee, Mondsee and Attersee plus Irrsee and Fuschlsee and in clear days even Chiemsee in Bayern. Plus the view from the summit (1783m) guarantees the gorgeous mountain scenery of Höllengebirge range, Dachstein mountains and famous Watzmann.
Route: Except for the steep and alpine "Himmelpforte" before the peak, the ascent is rather easy. The descent is easy, not steep and suitable for people in recovery (like me). In the worst case you could take the Schafbergbahn downhill. We'll also have a break at the Wolfgangsee.
Technical Difficulty: This hike is NOT suitable for beginners. You have to be absolutely surefooted and no fear of heights. You should have above average pace (>450m gain/hour) and good stamina. The pace (esp. downhill) will be slower than on my usual hikes due to my injury but still be above average.
Provisory schedule: We'll start in Munich at around 7:30 for an about 2h long car trip (ca 180km) over Salzburg. Don't make plans for the evening. Estimates incl. buffers:
Dinner: I have reserved a table (for currently 5 persons at 18:30) at the famous Bärenwirt in Salzburg, which claims to offer the best breaded fried chicken in Austria and other typical Austrian cuisine.
Transport: We will go by car as the starting point is not accessible by public transport. The driver(s) may require passengers to pay in advance. The shared costs include the Vignette (9,2€). Please read the car instructions carefully. If the hike or lift is cancelled or postponed, the drivers must reimburse the prepaid payments. Otherwise a passenger dropping out before departure must only be reimbursed if the driver can find a replacement.
Legal disclaimer: This is not a guided tour. I merely organize the trip to the starting point with like-minded, qualified, properly equipped and reliable persons. Every participant must be able to navigate her/himself on the suggested route. If you join, you acknowledge that hiking is dangerous, you are fully responsible for yourself and that you have sufficient insurance (DAV, Bergrettung or similar).
Weather forecast: at the moment dry and sunny https://kachelmannwetter.com/de/vorhersage/2766218-schafberg/kompakt
On the day before the hike, please check whether it was postponed (due to weather) and check your emails for further informations. I'll send you an invitation to a WhatsApp group.
Things to bring (mandatory):
Note: Please unjoin the event well in advance, if you don't want to come. You cannot unjoin the event when it is starting in less than 12 hours.
