This Saturday weather finally looks good. I want to go back to Karwendel after long time not there anymore. This hike crossing from Eppzirlertal to Wörgltal is particularly scenic, especially at the Eppzirler Scharte, a saddle in the Karwendel mountains, primarily
formed by the Hauptdolomit, a major dolomite formation in the region. This dolomite was deposited in a shallow sea between reefs and the African continent.
From
Gießenbach we hike comfortably through the rocky Gießenbachklamm and
then through the beautiful Eppzirlertal, past the pasture areas. We
follow the road to the Eppzirler Alm. From the alm we go further
and the landscape becomes more and more interesting and wild till we
reach the beautiful Eppzirler Scharte. This part of the route goes
through the typical Karwendel landscape to the Solsteinhaus. except
for the geological composition of the rocks. In contrast to the large
chains, whose summit mostly consists of horizontally layered limestone
banks, the small area between Erlspitze and Kuhljoch is made of
dolomite. The mostly vertical layers are heavily eroded and present
themselves today as a bizarre rocky landscape made up of numerous
turrets, reminiscent of the South Tyrolean Dolomites On
the way through the large scree we may, with a little luck, spot
chamois on the grassy areas between the rocks. The Eppzirler Scharte is situated within the Erlspitze Group, a horseshoe-shaped formation encircling the Eppzirler. The steep
Höllkar col, whose ends are the Eppzirler Scharte and the Erlscharte,
is located in the heart of the Karwendel Nature Park and is surrounded
by a magnificent rocky arena.
We keep going till we
reach Solsteinhaus that lie in a beautiful green location just under Erlspitze. Here we have our deserved break. Then we head to Innsbruck Valley where we finally reach Hochzirl station, where we catch the train back to Munich.
