Two Days in the High Alps – Glacier Practice & Summit Adventure
We’re heading to the Weißkugel, the second-highest peak in the Ötztal Alps — a stunning, glaciated giant straddling the border between Italy and Austria. With its remote setting and panoramic views, it’s a true alpine classic. This two-day trip is perfect if you want to refresh glacier skills, rope techniques, or just enjoy an epic summit weekend with good company.
I’ve already reserved 4 spots at the Weißkugelhütte, our cozy mountain base for Saturday night.
To confirm your place, please transfer a €15 deposit per person .
We’ll leave Munich early in the morning and drive together to Melag in the Langtauferer Tal (about 3.5–4 hours).
From there, we’ll hike up to the Weißkugelhütte (2,544 m) — there are two options:
Direct route (2.5–3 hrs): straightforward and faster
Glacier educational trail (3–3.5 hrs): a bit longer but more scenic, with great glacier viewpoints
Once we reach the hut, we’ll spend the afternoon practicing glacier travel techniques:
Moving as a rope team
Crampon & ice axe handling
Refreshing crevasse rescue methods
Then, we’ll relax, enjoy dinner at the hut, and get ready for an early start.
We’ll start early — headlamps on — and begin our ascent across the Langtauferer Ferner glacier.
The route takes us up to the Weißkugeljoch (3,368 m), and then onto the east flank of the mountain.
Summit goal: Weißkugel (3,739 m)! The view is absolutely worth the effort.
After some well-earned photos and snacks, we’ll descend back to the hut, then hike down to Melag.
From there, we drive back to Munich — aiming to be home by evening.
