Description

DAY 1 (SATURDAY)
Disclaimer: feel free to join any of the two hikes. The last cable car down from First (Sat) departures at 6 p.m.

Saturday route: https://www.hiking-buddies.com/routes/routes_list/6652/

Sunday - event + route:
 https://www.hiking-buddies.com/routes/events/11945/   https://www.hiking-buddies.com/routes/routes_list/6653/

On Saturday, I plan to go to Grindelwald, take the bus to Grosse Scheidegg and hike to First, leave my larger backpack at the mountain hotel, and then hike to Schwarzhoren and Faulhorn. I hope to enjoy beautiful views of Brienzersee, Grindelwald, and Bachalpsee. We will stop at Berghotel Faulhorn for a quick meal. There were no more reasonably priced accommodations available in Grindelwald, so I plan to spend the night at Berggasthaus First.

The goal of the Sunday's hike is to reach the Schreckhornhütte (hut) and return to Grindelwald. We will see the Eismeer glacier and several four-thousanders along the way. We will also stop at the Bäregghütte (hut), probably twice. The first cable car to Grindelwald leaves at 8 a.m., and I hope to start the hike from there around 9 a.m. I hope we would be able to leave our larger backpacks at the lower station, but if not, we will have to take the bus to the train station to use the lockers and return (I read that the lockers are quite small).

Important!
Please read the route descriptions. Both are challenging!: 9:45 hours (20 km, 1,583 m elevation gain) and 11:30 hours (22 km, 1,831 m elevation gain) according to Hiking Buddies statistics. My app shows even more – 1724 m and 2162 m. I want to complete Saturday's route in less than 8 hours and Sunday's in less than 9 hours (not counting the cable car ride and searching for luggage storage). This means short and limited breaks, maintaining a fast pace even when climbing, and even slow running when the terrain is technically easy and flat/downhill. Both routes are rated T4, but Sunday's route is mostly T4, while Saturday's has only a very short T4 section.

If you want to join the Saturday hike and not stay at the Hut (there are only a few beds left), remember that the last cable car leaves at 6 p.m. so after this time you will have to walk down, and we will start our hike at First mountain hotel after 11:30 a.m. The route can be shortened by skipping Faulhorn, but we will have to split up.

I will try to watch the pace and make it as comfortable as possible, but in case we are too slow, we might have to split up. There is a possibility to make both hikes shorter or to use additional cable cars. Please be prepared for this eventuality (power bank, lots of water, own map/app and familiarize yourself with the route).

Hi Bart, thanks for posting this hike around the Grindelwald region, would it possible to have a separate event on hiking buddies website for the Sunday hike, I may join it and may be others will also be encouraged to join as there are no hikes planned on Sunday. [only if its feasible otherwise people can also look in the description of this post to join the hikes they prefer]. Assuming for the second hike the starting point is Grindelwald Bahnof. Thanks Devarshi
