Description
Spontaneous use of free day and good weather forecast.
Not a beginner-friendly hike!
Tempo relatively fast, based on the snow conditions.
I suggest taking RB 60 from Munich at 7:32.
Good to know
You will need good condition and experience in moving in snowy mountain terrain, snow gear (waterproof shoes, spikes and poles), headlamp, warm clothes, enough food and water, mountain insurance.

Hi Mirko,
just wanted to let you know, we did a hike to Daniel and Upsspitze on 26.10.2025. That day we had snow up to the knees in some places, extremely strong wind, and met only 9 people (in whole day) on the trail.
We followed the route from/to Lermoos. Don’t count on the trail from Upsspitze to Grüner Ups & Mertl Joch — on Sunday it was effectively one‐way only (or you'd need to break your own trail, what might be difficult + takes time).
For the descent we used Grödel/spikes, especially through the snowy/icy parts of Annika Grat (from Upsspitze to Daniel).

Hi Irina, thanks for your comment! I may then change the route and go the classic way up from Lermoos and see the situation there to decide the reasonable way down (Lähm, Lermoos back or Ehrwald around). And in any case, gaiters are coming with me, too :D
