Description

Dear Hiking-Buddies!

The beautiful and colorful autumn has arrived. Therefore, the weather is perfect to do some nice and long hikes!

Since I live in the northern part of München and I usually spend my working days in the northern part of this lovely city, I have always wanted to explore the south part of our gorgeous city and do a hike along Isar all the way down to Starnberger See.

Therefore, I’m inviting my fellow Hiking-Buddies to join me this Saturday for a nice and veeery long (!) hike from München all the way down to Starnberger See.

We will start at U-Bahn "Thalkirchen (Tierkpark)" in München and walk along the Isar and pass by Grünwald. Then we will walk westward towards Gauting. Once we have reached Gauting, we will turn south and head towards Starnberger See. The final destination is Starnberger Bahnhof. From there, we will either take the S-Bahn (S6) or the Regional-Express (RE) back to München Hauptbahnhof.

Who do I expect to join this hike?
I expect fit and sporty Hiking-Buddies, who do sports on a regular basis. This is a veeery long hike (34,8 km!) and therefore we need to maintain a decent walking pace. We will aim for a pace at 4 km/h. Thus, you should be able to walk this pace at longer periods of time (for a whole day!). We will not run, but surely walk at a decent pace. If you sign up for this hike, you need to have done at least 3 hikes in the past, that were longer than 20km. I will check you profile and if you have not done at least 3 hikes that were longer than 20km, then unfortunately I will have to remove you from the participants’ list. I do not try to exclude anybody from this hike, but I want to make sure that we can walk at a decent pace for the whole day.

Time details:
We will meet at U-Bahn "Thalkirchen (Tierpark)" in München at 6:45am and start hiking at 7:00am. This is a very long hike (34,8 km!); if we maintain a pace of 4 km/h then the pure walking-time should be around 8 ½ or 9 hours. With stops and breaks the total time will be about 10 ½ or 11 hours, or maybe even 12 hours (!). Hence, I plan to arrive at Starnberger Bahnhof at 6:00pm or 7:00pm. Please do not join if you have plans for Saturday night in München. The group starts together, stays together the whole time and finishes the hike together. No renegades please! :-)

Meeting point:

Saturday, 6:45am at U-Bahn "Thalkirchen (Tierpark)", in front of "Kiosk 1917" (coordinates: 48.101054, 11.547558). Google Maps Location: https://cutt.ly/gw7n367 Hopefully we will be back at München Hauptbahnhof at 7:00pm or 8:00pm, the latest.

What to bring:

  • Proper hiking clothes: weather looks fine, but please be prepared for possible wind or light rain. Bring a rain-jacket, hat, scarf and gloves.
  • Decent footwear: trail running shoes or running shoes are fine. But no plain sneakers please! If you come in sneakers and/or jeans, you will have to go home!
  • Food for the whole day: we will not stop at a hut or a restaurant.
  • Drinks for the whole day: at least 2½ liters of water.
  • Cash (coins!) for the S-Bahn or Regional-Express (RE) back to München Hauptbahnhof.
  • Charged mobile phone with downloaded GPX-track.
  • Good mood and a smile. :-)

If the weather is not suitable to do this long hike, then I reserve myself the right to cancel the hike by Friday, 6:00pm. Therefore, please continuously monitor the comments below.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me via Hiking-Buddies email.

I’m looking forward to seeing you on Saturday!

David
