Rund um Staffelsee, Riegsee, Froschhausersee + Münter Haus
Next lake from the Bavarian Top 10 for ILC.
This time we are going to a small town that played a significant role in the history of world art: Murnau.
I could have used the route from Chid,
which is very well designed 👏, but I created a new one because:
• I’d like to include Froschhauser See as well (so I don’t have to come back for it if I decide on ILC25 😉)
• and the main reason: the Münter House
Münter House - the house where Gabriele Münter and Wassily Kandinsky lived from 1909 to 1914, and where she later spent the rest of her life after he left.
In the cellar of this house, that heroic woman hid Kandinsky’s paintings and other masterpieces of Der Blaue Reiter from the Nazis. After her death, the works were donated to the Lenbachhaus.
The House/Museum opens at 2:00 pm, so if we are there at that time, we could visit it. I was inside a couple of years ago. If I remember correctly, there are some personal belongings from Münter’s time and some authentic Kandinsky paintings on the stairs.
Full info about the house can be found here (eng version available):
