Description
Read carefully before you join!
Easy but long and fast hike in the Wimbachgries valley, between the giants Watzmann and Hochkalter.
At the Hirschwieskopf, the southmost peak of the Watzmann massif, we are rewarded with a view of rest of the massif, esp. Südspitze, and Königssee, Hochkalter, Hundstod etc. Mountain goats are common in that area.
The route shares about half of the way with the Watzmann traverse , so it can give a good idea of your timing if you plan to traverse Watzmann as a day trip in the future.
Route: From parking lot at Wimbachgriesbrücke, through Wimbachklamm (entrace fee!) https://www.berchtesgaden.de/wimbachklamm , passing the closed Wimbachgriesalm, the junction to Watzmann Südspitze, Trischübel and continuing the steeper ascent to the peak. We return on the same way.
Technical Difficulty: This hike is NOT suitable for beginners. One exposed segment is secured by ropes. You have to be absolutely surefooted and no fear of heights. You should have above average pace (6km/h on flat surface, >500m gain/hour) and stamina. We will not run but have a fast pace, especially on the nearly flat path in the valley.
Preliminary schedule: We'll start in Munich at around 7:30 and should be back before 6 o'clock. The hike itself will take about 6-7hrs. Due to return to standard time on Sunday 3:00 (clock set back 1hour) 7:30 equals 8:30 of your biological time.
Transport: We will go by car as the starting point is not easily accessible by public transport. The driver(s) may require passengers to pay in advance. Please read the car instructions carefully. If the hike or lift is cancelled or postponed, the drivers must reimburse the prepaid payments. Otherwise a passenger dropping out before departure must only be reimbursed if the driver can find a replacement. Car drivers must contact me first if they drop out.
Joining: Click on carpool. If a car has free seats, read the instructions and possibly join the car. Otherwise add yourself to the waiting list and regularly check for free seats. You are not automatically assigned to a car. If a car is deleted, you must add yourself to the waiting list again.
If you join my car you must pay within 4 hours!. Otherwise you may be banned from the car.
Legal disclaimer: This is not a guided tour. I merely organize the trip to the starting point with like-minded, qualified, properly equipped and reliable persons. Every participant must be able to navigate her/himself on the suggested route. If you join, you acknowledge that hiking is dangerous, you are fully responsible for yourself and that you have sufficient insurance (DAV, Bergrettung or similar).

Good to know
On the day before the hike, please check whether it was postponed (due to weather) and check your emails for further informations. I'll send you an invitation to a WhatsApp group.
Things to bring (mandatory):
- hiking (!) shoes/boots
- water (min. 2l, reservoir recommended)
- snacks (there is no hut on the way)
- charged smartphone, emergency no 112 saved, optionally powerbank
- sun glasses, sunscreen
- wind breaker/jacket or raincoat (just in case)
- good mood
- optional: hiking poles
Note: Please unjoin the event well in advance, if you don't want to come. You cannot unjoin the event when it is starting in less than 12 hours.
