Alternative dates: Sept 23/29/30 if the weather is bad

Info: The tour via Gatterl is one of the easiest hikes to the Zugspitze, as it does not require any climbing equipment, and has moderate steepness and offers scenic views.

On this last day of Summer we will take advantage of the extended operation hours of the Austrian cable car during Zugspitze Oktoberfest (last ride at 18:00) and hopefully good weather to hike from Ehrwald to the peak of Zugspitze. We will return with the cable car to Ehrwald (the German Seilbahn is closed). Fast hikers could return on the same route or the Stopselzieher via ferrata (helmet required!).

For slower hikers the following shortcuts are possible (buy the Gatterl ticket for 38€):

  • taxi from Ehrwald train station -> Ehrwald Almbahn Talstation (saves about 45mins)
  • cable car from Ehrwald Almbahn Talstation -> Bergstation (400m gain, saves about 50mins)
  • cable car from Sonnalpin to Zugspitze (last trip at 16:25, saves about 400m gain, 1,5hrs and the most difficult part)

See route details for the exact route.

Disclaimer: This is NOT a guided tour. You are responsible for yourself.

Technical Difficulty: This hike is NOT suitable for beginners. You have to be surefooted and no fear of heights. Also, you need a very good stamina for the complete hike. We'll have subgroups with different pace.
JOIN ONLY IF you are regular hiker, fit, not slow and have finished hikes with at least 1600m gain.
You must make it to the cable car till 17:50 at the latest! If you don't, you are on your own and need to find a place to stay overnight - which can be very difficult without reservation. If you notice you have overestimated yourself, you should rather turn around at Gatterl or Knorrhütte.

Note: Please unjoin the event well in advance, if you don't want to come. You cannot unjoin the event when it is starting in less than 12 hours.
