Description

Join me for a hike from Alpspitze to Zugspitze. Winter traverse of the Jubiläumsgrat (2 days) with overnight stay at the ridge hut (bivvy) - unique natural experience of the most amazing high alpine ridges in Germany in winter. The Jubiläumsgrat tour in winter time could be compared with an AD rated (SAC scale) summer tour in the Western Alpes.

Disclaimer: having traversed the route in both directions in summer, I am however not a mountain guide, this is not a guided tour - thus, everybody is responsible for her/himself. Make yourself familiar with the route and its requirements.

There is no food, water or toilet in the hut/bivouac.

Technical difficulty: The hike has a difficulty grade T6. With the recent snow the winter route with crampons will feel a bit more challenging.

What to bring:

  • Crampons (mandatory, no spikes)
  • Ice axe (mandatory)
  • Climbing helmet (mandatory)
  • Harness
  • Via Ferrata set
  • B/C, C or D boots compatible (and fitted) with crampons
  • Headlamp; torch
  • Sleeping bag, liner
  • HS (rain) jacket; long merino underwear; down/primaloft jacket; optional balaclava
  • 2 pair gloves (leather + fleece)
  • 2-3 x HMS Carabiner; optional 30m+ rope/cord (climbing rope; RAP Line; Petzl RAD, etc.); rappeling device
  • Ice screws
  • Pillow case for the bivvy (optional)
  • Food: snack,  dehydrated meal, water, tea, thermos (there is no food or water in the bivvy)
  • Emergency/survival bivy
  • Fully charged GPS-capable cell phone
  • Optional: rescue beacons (RECCO); Sat-Messengers (Garmin InReach Mini, etc.)

Requirements:

Safety requirements for the participants:

  • Technical: experience going on mixed routes with crampons and climbing up to the III. Grade UIAA
  • Fitness: good condition for 3 - 5 hours climbing in 2500m - 3000m altitude

Disclaimer:

Hiking Buddies Munich is not a group of professional mountain guides but individuals gathering for sport activities. Each participant is responsible for her-/ himself and has to be prepared, bring suitable equipment and has to check if he meets the physical requirements. Hiking includes a certain risk and everybody is responsible for his/ her own safety. It is highly recommended having some kind of insurance in case of an incident

Good to know
  • We take the Osterfelder cable car (Alpspitzbahn) for the ascent to Osterfelderkopf (ca. 2000m) and a cable car from Zugspitze for descent into the valley.
  • We will ascend Alpspitze via Alpspitz Ferrata (A/B rated Via Ferrata in summer, in winter conditions crampons may be necessary in snow/ice), "Nordwandsteig" (the route marked on the map) is a backup route to Alpspitze summit.
Comments
We decided not to proceed further after Grießkarscharte because of poor visibility. The Via Ferrata till Alpspitze was quite tough!
