Another sunny and warm weekend. Let´s be more ambitious this time and go again to Austria. This time our target will be Rofanspitze.

Rofanspitze (2259m) is not the highest but probably the most famous peak in the extremely scenic Rofan mountains. The panorama can hardly be beaten in good weather for the huge number of mountains you can see and the beautiful view to alpine lakes, which one passes in the ascent and descent.
From the upper parking lots at the Rofanseilbahn, a path leads up steeply through a forest road. Here you keep to the right, cross the brook and walk right along the stream further up. Again in the forest it continues over a few serpentines. Finally, the path leads across the alpine pastures directly to the mountain station of the Rofanseilbahn to the Erfurter Hütte that offers a sunny terrace overlooking the Achensee on one side and Dalfazer walls on the other one. First great view of the day!
The Rofan mountains are made up of soft grassy groups on the west side mostly, but on the other side mountains suddenly have steeply sloping rock faces, long rock bands, wild mountain peaks and wide high valleys. The huts are located mainly on the Achensee side. Behind, the wild mountain world begins and here we go. After the first steep climb, it's worth taking a look back. We can look down to the Erfurter Hütte which are already quite far away, behind which lie the rocky mountain kingdom of Karwendel. What a great view! From the Erfurter Hütte on the broad trail a few meters down and left of the Mauritzalm at the road branching we follow the signs "Hochiss". Right below the Gschöllkopf we hike diagonally to a saddle and to the branch on the Gschöllkopf. We go straight north into the wide basin south of Hochiss.
We then continue north on the right slopes of the basin until we reach the turn-off to the Spieljoch in the middle of the basin. Here on the right a few meters over an insured place a bit steeper uphill (signposted Spieljoch) we reach the broad grassy south ridge from the Spieljoch and northward almost straight up on the grassy summit (2,237 m), the first one of the day.
We then continue to the Seekarlspitze. Directly from the summit we go steeply on Serpentines down west in a saddle traverse following the trails on the western back of the Seekarlspitze straight up to the summit (2,261 m - small wrought-iron summit cross with plaque).
After the second summit storm we descend again to the marked path, hiking south around the impressive Rosskopf that many climbers love till we reach the Grubascharte. Here again we go half left on an unmarked trail up to the west ridge, on which we finally go straight to the Rofanspitze (2259m).
From the summit you have an impressive panoramic view, for example to the neighboring peaks of Hochiss, Unnütze or Guffert or the distant peaks of Großglockner, Hochkönig or Zuckerhütl, Kaisergebirge and Zillertal, the Grubasee and the Zireinersee lakes.
On the Adlerweg we walk back to the Erfurter Hütte, where we enjoy the last rays of sun on the terrace offering great views to Achensee before getting back to valley where we can have food and drinks together at a restaurant in Maurach. :)
