Description

We'll take advantage of the extended operating hours of the Austrian cable car on days with Fondue Abend (last car 21:30) to watch the sunset (20:55).

This hike is only for very fit and fast hikers, who don't need a via ferrata set. Do NOT join if you haven't climbed Zugspitze before. The expected duration from start to the top is about 3,5h or faster.

Alternative date in case of bad weather is August 11th (sunset 20:35).

Route: we use the northern (shade) Bayernsteig to Wiener Neustädter Hütte and continue directly to Stopselzieher (secured with ropes).

Technical Difficulty: This hike is NOT suitable for beginners. You have to be absolutely surefooted and no fear of heights. You must have previous experience with via ferrata (B) and UIAA I scrambling. You should have above average pace (>550m gain/hour) and stamina, and walking speed of about 6km/h in the flat parts.

Weather forecast

Transport: We will go by car as the starting point is not easily accessible by public transport. We'll share the car expenses (no vignette required). The driver(s) may require passengers to pay in advance. Drivers should check whether all passenger fulfil the mandatory conditions (see below) and reject those who don't. Please read the car instructions carefully. If the hike or lift is cancelled or postponed, the drivers must reimburse the prepaid payments. Otherwise a passenger dropping out before departure must only be reimbursed if the driver can find a replacement. Car drivers must contact me first if they drop out.

Joining: Click on carpool. If a car has free seats, read the instructions and possibly join the car. Otherwise add yourself to the waiting list and regularly check for free seats. You are not automatically assigned to a car.

Legal disclaimer: This is not a guided tour. I merely organize the trip to the starting point with like-minded, qualified, properly equipped and reliable persons. Every participant must be able to navigate her/himself on the suggested route. If you join, you acknowledge that hiking is dangerous, you are fully responsible for yourself and that you have sufficient insurance (DAV, Bergrettung or similar).

Note: Please unjoin the event well in advance, if you don't want to come. You cannot unjoin the event when it is starting in less than 12 hours. No-shows will be recorded in your profile.

unfortunately the current weather forecast is some rain and clouds. let's hope it improves until tomorrow evening, when I want to decide whether to postpone it.

Hey guys, I have my birthday tomorrow, so I want to invite you all to Fondue Dinner and some drinks on the top, as soon as we reach the Zugspitze! (I got a phone call today morning from Zugspitze.at who have informed me that I could accommodate our group in the restaurant). The weather shall be still cloudy and might be a bit rainy in the beginning of the hike, but it looks like there is a high pressure front coming in, which will last from late Wednesday evening through Thursday. Hope, Thomas won‘t cancel this event 😁

If we do the hike, my "group" starts one hour earlier in munich. We will have a bit of a slower pace, and the 2nd group can catch us on the way.

Hi Thomas, Can i join this Hike tomorrow, but not going to hike just take the cable car up and go down later with you after sunset. Would that be possible?

current status: even if stops raining around 18-19, there would very likely be little visibility due to clouds (Zugspitze is an attractor) and cold winds. we couldn't see the sunset. Personally I would rather postpone it to a day with better weather but I don't want to stop you and don't want to mess up Andy's birthday plans. please comment here whether you definitely want to go today. Maybe Shailen could drive with his car and replace mine?
