Description

Read the whole description & pay attention to the [Action required]

In case you cannot join the hike, drop out more than 12h before the start.

[Action required] In case you do not have yet a review from me in your profile mentioning your pace, please fill in this form (click here) simultaneously when you join the event. I will remove permanently anyone not doing that, without warning.

General information

Weather: Mostly sunny, negative temperatures at the top.

Route: Some short T3 sections on the way up. Way down should be easier.

Pace / fitness level: We will keep a minimum uphill pace of 600m gain / hour.

Transportation: See detailed explanations further below.

To do before the hike

[Action required] Download a GPS app (see my Facebook post), and upload the GPX file of the route on the app. Learn how to use the app you chose with some videos / online tutorials. You can download the file from this event page.

Known bug: Make sure the file you have downloaded has a .gpx extension. If not, just rename it, as it might happen that you get a ".gpx.xml" file instead of just ".gpx", especially when downloading from a phone.

Test Arc'teryx gear for free!

Hiking Buddies has a partnership with Arc'Teryx. I have gear meant to be borrowed for free. The list on this Google Sheet. The day before a hike, you can ask me to bring the item you're interested in testing during the hike. At the end of the hike, you will have the option to keep it for one month. That's an amazing opportunity - the jackets cost about 600 CHF, it's really good stuff.

Schedule (approx.)

  • If you are joining a car, check the Carpool page to see meeting place / time for your car.
  • 15h45: We all meet at the parking / starting point of the route (written at the top of this page). We start walking at that time precisely, we won't wait for latecomers. It's your responsibility to make sure to arrive on time.
  • 18h30: Peak, group pic, and down immediately
  • 19h30: Car
  • 20h00: Zürich

Do not plan anything right after a hike, we might come back much later than expected if something unexpected happens.

Gear

Mandatory: Proper hiking boots (or trail running shoes) with a good grip, lamp, warm clothes, gloves, SPIKES.

You always need a lamp (head or handheld) with you, even during day hikes. Your phone is not a lamp.

See here an exhaustive check list of gear for single day hikes, and here my recommendations regarding spikes.

Important rules

 Applying to my events:

  • No waiting for latecomers, plan to be at the starting / meeting point at least 5 minutes prior to the mentioned time.
  • If your Hiking Buddies profile does not have a comment from me mentioning your pace (based on a previous hike together), you might be asked to fill a form to be able to join the hike. If the form isn't filled, I will remove you permanently from the event without notice.
  • Some of my hikes will mention a "minimum uphill pace" in meters gain per hour. Should you not be able to keep that pace, we will not wait for you and would meet back at the parking at the indicate time in the schedule. The pace is written in "General information", at the top of this page.

Applying to Hiking Buddies (incl. my events):

  • Unjoining allowed until 12 hours before the start of the event.
  • No show prevents you from joining my hikes for one month.
  • The organizer is no professional guide. Participants are responsible for themselves, must do their own research about the route, and must be able to navigate by themselves (in case the groups split for some reason, for example).

Transportation

This is a carpool event, possibly combined with people coming by public transports. Anyone with a car, like me, can add theirs via the Carpool button at the top of this page. If you join by public transports, see the guidelines further down.

Instructions for passengers in my car

  • My car is a BMW Gran Tourer Grey (6 seats). In case 5 people are in my car, I can add a 6th seat for a small person upon request. Plate starts with "M-EL".
  • Meeting time is indicated in the carpool page (green button at the top). Plan to arrive 5 minutes earlier.
  • Meeting point is at the intersection between Rieterstrasse and Effingerstrasse (click to open Maps), near Brunau.
  • Fuel payment: Pay the amount indicated on the carpool page prior to the hike (to avoid no shows). Can be CHF or EUR (same amount). If no payment is done, I will give your seat to someone else 18 hours before the start of the event. Click on that link for the payment options (Revolut preferred, otherwise Transfer, not Twint).

How can I join by public transports?

Case 1: You are the first one joining by public transports

  1. Click on Carpool (top of the page)
  2. Click on Add a car (even if it is not actually a car)
  3. Set the number of seats available to 5, so that others joining by public transports can just use your "fake car" instead of adding another one (it would get too messy on the carpool page).
  4. In the field Contact details, write "Fake car for Public transports"
  5. In the field Instructions, write "Join this fake car if you're also going by public transports"
  6. The other fields aren't relevant.

Case 2: Someone else already joins by public transports

    1. Join the fake car already created

Important: You need to figure out yourself which train / bus station you need to reach in order to be on time at the above mentioned parking / starting point of the route.

    Other frequently asked questions

Where / when do we meet?

If you are a driver or joining by public transports, you need to be at the "Parking / Starting point" mentionned at the very top of this page. The time is also there. Plan to arrive 5 minutes earlier, at least.

If you are a passenger in a car, click on the carpool button. The meeting point should have been indicated by the driver on that page, as well as the time. Plan to arrive 5 minutes earlier, at least. In case of questions, reach out to your driver directly.
