Description
Meeting time: Sunday 27 March, 07:15 ; HBf Platform 29
We buy Bayern group ticket and catch the train towards Unterammergau at 7:32
Things to bring:
- Cash/Paypal for the ticket
- Waterproof hiking boot/ snow shoes
- gaiters
- spikes/crampons
- spare socks
- Passport/Id
- Food/drinks for the way
- Raincoat/winter clothes
- set up .gpx route in gpx viewing app (like openstreetmaps, komoot, GPX viewer etc.)
- See corona regulations
Good to know
Note: Please unjoin the event well in advance, if you don't plan to come. You cannot unjoin the event, when it is starting in less than 12 hours.
Disclaimer: Hiking can be dangerous. I am not a mountain guide. Everybody is responsible for her/himself. Make yourself familiar with the route and its requirements. It's recommended to download a map and bring a cell phone and first aid kit for emergencies.

about 50 % of the hike is waking on the ridge with a bit of scrambling. so spikes are very very important as I am expecting ice on the rocks. If you have fear of heights then please reconsider the route before you join.

We completed Teufelstättkopf and Sonnenberg succesfully. We skipped the Rappenkop as the path around Am Zahn went T4+ (slope > 60deg + super hard snow). I would suggest not making this hike in winter if the weather conditions are not good.

this route was seriously dangerous.

we came alive from the teeth of the devil. Basically there were 2 dead bodies in the valley while we were on Sonnenberggrat on Sunday the 27th.
This makes me think that we should have turned back when people from our group started to get uncomfortable with the route.

Without knowing what happened exactly, it is difficult to judge the situation , in my opinion. What stood out for me was - I am not blaming anyone - the lack of experience either within our group partly and certainly amongst the others that joined us in somewhat difficult terrain leading to fear (sometimes good, sometimes paralysing and dangerous). I have been on many routes where people have died, which doesn't mean I will have the same experience. Unfortunately ambitions, ignoprance, underestimating dangers, lack of skills and agility/fitness / bad clothing / ego can all contribute to disasters which otherwise would much less likely happen. For me, despite the compacted snow and comparative shade on N side, I was a bit nervous about snow slab avalanche danger plus the bad footholds on grassy parts on the steep slopes. Other than that, it wasn't overly dangerous for experienced people.

The suggestion about shouting out the dangers of winter versions of steeper slopes being ranked up e.g. T3 to T4+ is a very good one! We live (hopefully) and learn ;)
