Description

It‘s going to be hot and sunny, so let‘s make the most of it by walking across Säuling to find a lake (Alpsee), and finish at Neuschwanstein! Note that the route is a stretch goal, and we may well skip Jochberg and Zunderkopf (I will only take the long route if everyone is up for it; the shorter route is 1300 m ascent).

We completed the full route as published, except for skipping the short out-and-back to Zunderkopf. We then finished with a swim in Alpsee at the end. The descent was steeper than the ascent, so I’d recommend doing this route in reverse in future. The upsides are the easier descent, and that Dürrenberg Alm and Urisee near the end, but the disadvantages are that Neuschwanstein is always behind you, and that it’ll be much harder to motivate a group to extend to Jochberg (lower although still stunning, +400 m asc).
