Description
Summer is here, and with it the start of the Alpine hut season! Neue Traunsteiner Hütte is in Germany, and so is accessible on the 9 Euro ticket. It’s hidden away on the plateau of the Reiter Alpe, so we should be free from light pollution for a bit of stargazing. The summit of Großer Weitschartenkopf is also very close to the hut, meaning we can easily reach it for sunrise at 5:09 if we want.
The ascent involves a T4 section with via ferrata at grade A/B. There is then an optional extension to Wagendrischelhorn at grade B/C.
Kit list
This is what I am bringing; your kit list should be similar.

Accommodation
We are staying at the Neue Traunsteiner Hütte. Each person is responsible for their own booking.
Transport
We are taking the train from Munich. Each person is responsible for buying their own ticket.

Weather
It looks like it will be very sunny, with valley temperatures reaching 28º and overnight temperatures getting down to 8°C. There is a small chance of rain.
Safety
Please observe all laws and guidelines for preventing the spread of coronavirus. I have created this event in order to find other people keen on walking in the mountains, but I am not a guide, and each member is responsible for their own safety. You are expected to familiarise yourself with the route before registering, and only register once you are happy that you can complete it.

We took the train in the description on the way out (~7am), getting off the bus one stop early at “Hintersee, Auzinger” to save the first 650m of the route (10:25). If we had left an hour earlier from Munich, we would have arrived 45 mins earlier. The Gasthof Auzinger was happy for us to use their toilets. We then followed the river on a very peaceful path up towards the start of the ascent, gently easing us into the walk. We crossed a suspension bridge (slightly deviating from the planned route) to avoid a road section.

Once we did rejoin the road and started the ascent (12:00), it became very steep, climbing through the forest. This was shaded for much of the way up, but from about 1400m (13:15) we were directly under the heat of the sun. From 1750m (14:45) it became rocky and we put helmets on, as we were walking under a large rocky cliff. On the traverse to the border, we encountered one snowfield, which was easily passable by descending below it, or passable through the narrow gap above it. The Klettersteig started at about 1920m (16:45), for which we used a Klettersteigset, but it would be passable without for experienced Alpine hikers.

At the Mayrbergscharte, (17:45) we saw that the “Normalweg” was blocked by snowfields, for which an ice axe and crampons would probably be advisable, so instead we all continued up the B/C Klettersteig (a set was definitely needed here) to the summit (as in the HB route). We summitted at 18:45, then after descending to 2120 m (19:15) took the “Rossgasse” path directly north of the summit, rather than following the ridge to Plattelkopf. The top section here involved some very easily crossable snowfields, and then it was a very rocky path onwards. In hindsight, the (slightly longer) Steinberggasse route (as on HB) may have been faster depending on how rocky it is. We arrived at the hut at 21:30.

Note that these timings are for the back of the group; from the Mayrbergscharte an advance party went ahead to reach the hut and ensure that dinner would be saved for us. This group arrived at 20:30. We were delayed by one person’s hiking boots falling apart, necessitating emergency repairs (which did not last long) and then switching to sandals.

In the morning we decided against the sunrise hike, as we had arrived so late. Instead we had breakfast (served until 8am), check-out time was 9am, and then we went straight to the descent to Unterjettenberg. On the descent, the distance signs are to Oberjettenberg, note that there is still an hour to go after this. At the bus stop in Unterjettenberg there is a substantial shelter for us to wait in the shade, as we had almost an hour to wait for our 13:22 bus.

Our route back went via Bad Reichenhall and Freilassing, unlike the connections in the event description via Traunstein. This meant we were heavily delayed by border checks on the train. We then stopped off in Prien for a swim and dinner.

In summary, I would advise travelling as early as possible to allow for delays on the route. Later in summer, there will be fewer snowfields to contend with. The hut is definitely one to recommend, and given the number of places available, it’s definitely a less-visited one.
