Description

2-Day trip onto the highest peak of Germany - Zugspitze  (2962m)

1st day: 2 hour hike from Hammersbach through Höllental Gorge (bring rainjacket or poncho) with overnight stay at Höllentalangerhütte (Dinner 18:00 - 20:00).

2nd day: heading towards Zugspitze at 7:00, we will climb through a via ferrata (A/B), cross the Höllentalferner (glacier) and take a lunch break at Randkluft.  The current conditions require the use of crampons, this equipment is now mandatory.

From randkluft (end of glacier), we continue through the 2nd, long via ferrata (B/C) to make it to Zugspitze. After a break on top of the summit taking tons of photos, we can use the cable car  from Zugspitze back down to Eibsee and the bus back to the parking lot in Hammersbach. A second option is to use the cogwheel train from Zugspitze, which brings us back to Hammersbach and therefore, would spare us the busride.

Hammersbach (770 m) - Klammeingangshütte (1047 m) - Höllentalklamm - Höllentalangerhütte (1381 m) - Zugspitze (2962 m)

This tour can be accessed by public transport from Munich - please see details in the description "Anreise" https://www.alpenverein-muenchen-oberland.de/huetten/alpenvereinshuetten/hoellentalangerhuette

If you go by car and want to avoid the busride on the second day,  its recommended to park one car at Eibsee Talstation instead of parking at the starting point in Hammersbach. This way, one could avoid the busride from Eibsee to Hammersbach (bus tends to be full of tourists in the afternoon)

Good to know

The first day, we meet in Hammersbach and hike up through Höllentalklamm (Entry Fee) all the way to Höllentalangerhütte, where we are going to have dinner and stay overnight. (T2 hike, 750 HM, 2:30 hours)

For the second part of this tour, you need to be able to do 1600 hm in one day, including two vie ferrate and a glacier crossing. (T5 hike, Via Ferrata A/B, Via Ferrata C,  1600 HM, 8:00 hours).

Additionally mandatory equipment (except your regular hiking gear)

  • Via Ferrata Set
  • Resting Sling with safebiner
  • Climbing Belt
  • Crampons
  • Ice Axe or Walking Poles
  • Helmet

Once you are having breakfast at Höllentalangerhütte, make sure to grab some food in the morning for our lunch break at Randkluft around noontime. There is no hut in between and we wont reach the summit (Münchner Haus) before 15:00 - 16:00.

Regarding costs, you want to consider the following (cash only!):

Hi to all, conditions for Zugspitze are currently near to perfect: There is no snow anywhere in the via ferrata and the glacier is soft and snowy, easy to walk on. However, all hikers have to bring crampons or spikes to prevent sliding and an ice axe or poles that can be used to stop a slide.
