The Walenpfad is a very panoramic and varied hike leading from the Brunni area above Engelberg to the Bannalp area above Wolfenschiessen. On the route a unique mountain panorama with views on the Walenstöcke massif and the central plateau ("Mitteland") awaits you.
Ristis - Brunni hut / Lake Härzli - Walenalp - Walegg - Alp Oberfeld - Urnerstaffel - Chrützhütte / Bannalp
Length: 11 km / Ascent: 700 m / Descent: 600 m / Approx. hiking time: 3 - 4 hours (depending on the pace of our group, we don't have to rush)
A detailed description of the Walenpfad and its highlights can be found here:
https://www.schweizmobil.ch/en/hiking-in-switzerland/routes/route-0573.html
We will meet in Engelberg and will take the cable car up to Ristis (starting point of the route). From the Chrützhütte / Bannalp (end point of the route) the cable car will take us down to Oberrickenbach. From Oberrickenbach we will take the bus to Wolfenschiessen (bus runs every hour) and from there the train back to Lucerne and Zurich. This is a full-day event. I don't expect us to be back in Zurich before 5 p.m.
Meeting time / point: Saturday, July 2, 09:55 a.m. at the train station in Engelberg, in front of the "avec" shop
Travel directions by train:
--> I will take the train from Zürich HB (I don't have a car)
Travel directions by car:
If you want to travel by car, I recommend you to park the car in Wolfenschiessen and then hop on the train to Engelberg (train leaves at 09:33 in Wolfenschiessen). There are some parking spots at the train station (https://goo.gl/maps/eJTjtz7F3AwPoP3g7) as well as close to the train station (https://goo.gl/maps/bDeXAww577EJaoNS7).
Train / cable car / bus tickets:
You can buy a "Walenpfad round trip ticket" online (CHF 29.- with half-fare card / CHF 43.- full-fare) :
The round trip ticket includes:
Enter the promo code "Walenpfad" in the online shop to get a 10% discount.
People with a GA don't need to buy the round trip ticket. They only need to pay for the cable car from Chrützhütte (Bannalp) to Oberrickenbach (CHF 12.-).
Technical / physical requirements:
This hike is not suitable for beginners. Most of the route is T2 terrain. In the second section, however, the path is narrow and you need to be sure-footed (but the path is well secured). You should be fit enough to hike for approx. 4 hours (length 11 km / Ascent: 700 m / Descent: 600 m). Along the way, we will make a few short photo stops and drinking breaks, as well as a longer lunch break (0.5 - 1 hour, depending on the group's preference).
What to bring:
swimming clothes, in case you want to swim in the Bannalpsee at the end of the hike
*At the end of the route, around the Bannalpsee, there are three mountain restaurants where we can stop for coffee and cake or other snacks. So you don't need to bring a huge pic-nic.
