Instructions for the hike

You will pay at the hut €63 pP. Just clicking on partecipating is not enough. Travelling costs will be shared in each car. Extra any food or drink you will buy along those two days.

You can unjoin event at latest 3 days in advance otherwise you will pay 25 Euro to Teplitzerhütte so please only serious persons that want to join the hike.

Water is the theme of this hike: lakes, streams, clouds, glaciers and canyon will show us all the stages of this element. In the highest part of Val Ridanna, not far from Sterzing (Italy) there are the beautiful seven lakes with their crystalline waters of a very deep blue, in the presence of a grandiose alpine scenery. Here we go to explore them and try a peak above 3000 m the next day with a gorgeous views towards glaciers in Italy and Austria. We will actually cross the borders to Austria shortly to be back to Italy again soon after.

From Vipiteno-Sterzing you go through the entire valley of Ridnaun (passing Stange and Mareit) to the final car park (1417 m, Mining Museum). Follow the «path of the mines» 28 to the left, going up the valley and touching the Lazzacher Alm hut (or Poschalm, 2113 m where we could have a break). at the fork, turn right onto path 33, which leads to the first lake (Moarer, 2468 m). Climb to the Egetjoch pass (2693 m, 1 hour from the lake); on the opposite side, soon turn left onto path 33a, which leads to the second group of lakes (Senner, 2647 m). On 33a you descend to the lower lakes (2510 m), and finally to the vast Trüber See (2344 m).  We then continue along the course of the stream. This leads to Sandboden, a vast glacial plain strewn with pebbles and crossed by a stream that forms a small and narrow gorge. The passage takes place via a bridge beyond which it is necessary to remount the ridge that supports the Vedretta Piana refuge (Grohmanhutte, 2254 m). One last effort brings us to Teplitzerhütte (2586m) where we have dinner and spend the night.

The second day we go towards Vogelhüttensee first and then Übeltalsee. From there we turn till the ridge that goes towards Roter Grat ridge climb the marked north-east ridge over rubble and boulders and we finally reach Roter Grat (Cresta Rossa, 3099m). Great views both to Italy and Austria peaks and glaciers ensured! From here we head back the same way towards Teplitzerhütte and Grohmanhutte and finally we go back to the valley crossing beautiful Burkardklamm, a beautiful gorge with two waterfalls.

Disclaimer: Hiking can be dangerous. I am not a mountain guide. Everybody is responsible for her/himself. Make yourself familiar with the route and its requirements. It's recommended to download a map and bring a cell phone.

If we can get more cars, we could potentially increase # spots, depending if we can get more spots in the hut.

Note everyone, since I got multiple private messages to accommodate more people, I have increased to 10 people but you will need to reserve your hut yourself. Note that the hut owners request booking via email. You'll probably need to be fast since it's a weekend booking. I am considering myself lucky I got 5 spots on a weekend since Marco had do do the trip on a week day as all weekend spots were booked. Anyone leading the second car group should sync on the hut booking! Happy to assist with anything else!

Folks, I'd be pleased if we could tag along more folks to this hike: What we need: More drivers and more confirmed spots in the hut. I think, it would be great to get one more driver. And then we try to get hut spots (we try out luck..)

Hi Shailene, I could offer to drive and get a car from CarSharing. Also I just had a chat with Thomas, and he said that I could do the 7 lakes and skip the Grat, if okay let me know. If all are okay with spitting the car costs, I could offer the option.

The two cars are full and the participants will be distributed among the two cars. Others, if there are still people on the waiting list who would really want to join -> What you can do it check with the hut again on Wednesday to see if other people have cancelled their reservation. Chances are that might happen since there may be some rain on the menu for the upcoming weekend. If you get a hut spot, then kindly organise your transport and let me know on your progress. Finally: There is a chance of having some rain on this trip. So, if you are not comfortable with rain or do not have equipment to hike in rain, then I would recommend to join the hike another time.
