Description

We'll try out the second highest German peak, Hochwanner, and start hiking before the sunrise.  If there's insurmountable ice, snow, or cold, we'll turn around. The last path portion near the summit might be more difficult than the T3 rating automatically assigned by hiking-buddies.com; there, a bit of scrambling/climbing up to IIAA category I-II may be involved.

Planned route:

Parking lot –

either Hämmermoosalm – Rotmoosalm – Südwandsteig
or Gaistalalm – along Kotbach – along Leitenbach

– Hochwanner – Südwandsteig – Tillfussalm – Gaistalalm – Parking lot.

Good to know

Take enough of water (I recommend > 3 L), food, a fully charged head lamp, rain coat/poncho, crampons, warm clothes, hygienic items, hiking poles, a fully charged mobile phone, disinfection liquid, and skin plasters with you. Beginners should take a climbing harness, just to be sure.

I'm not a guide; everyone hikes at his/her responsibility and risk.

I'm going to check the weather forecast around 36 h before the hike. If it sounds like rain, I'm likely to move the hike to another day or shorten the hike (to avoid climbing on wet stones).
