Description
Don't let the T4 scare you! This hike is mostly at high altitudes with alternating moderate ascents and descents. It's good to have decent hiking boots, but the paths should not be technically difficult. Starting at the monastery village of Engelberg, it goes around four lakes and offers imposant views to the mountain giants Hochstollen, Glogghuis and Titlis.

Meeting point:

We will meet at Engelberg train station at 8:53 (train arrival time). To organize a group train journey, create a virtual "car" in the carpool, indicate the departure point and select a huge number of participants (e.g. 10). The recommended train connection from Zurich is IR 70 (7:10, Gl. 6) -> change in Luzern to IR 2962 (8:10, Gl. 12). Note the change to winter time on the night from Saturday Oct 29 to Sunday Oct 30: the hike intentionally starts a bit earlier, since waking up early will be less painful that morning and also sunset will suddenly come one hour earlier!

You can of course also come by car, however the start and end point of the hike are located in different valleys - for this reason, park near Luzern train station and travel to Engelber by train. On the way back, the train will also go via Luzern.

Hike Plan

The hike starts at Engelberg, where we first take the gondola lift to Trüebsee. Afterwards we start the climb towards Jochpass, from where we will see Titlis, the highest mountain in the region. Leaving the most demanding section of the trip behind, we will descend towards Engstlensee and later enjoy the relaxing walk through high-altitude alpine pastures between lakes Melch and Tannen. At approximately 2/3 of the trip, there will be a guesthouse near lake Tannen where we can stop for a drink or have something to eat. The hike finishes at the village Melchsee-Frutt located by the last lake; from there we take the cablecar back to the valley and then bus / train to Luzern.

Great stuff Martin! Not sure if you wrote it and I just can't see it due to bad browser display, but do you plan to have lunch in a restaurant up there or should we bring sufficiently large food supplies?

It's a great hike - stage 8 of the Via Alpina. https://www.schweizmobil.ch/fr/suisse-a-pied/etappe-01234.html the waters of the Engstlesee are just phenomenal - one of the best parts of the Via Alpina. Enjoy

I saw that at some point the train from Zurich was full and people were instead joining the train from Basel - so if someone travels from Zurich, can they make sure they are in Nadine's train that still has four free seats, such that we know whom to expect in Basel? If the train from Zurich becomes full again, I hope it should be possible to start new one by clicking on "Add car" - let me know if it throws an error. Thanks and looking forward to seeing you at the hike!
