This is an awesome hike from Außerfern to Allgäu, crossing the border over Säuling to get wonderful views of Neuschwanstein and the many lakes around Füssen. It’s not a short day, at over 18 km and 1650 m of ascent, but the views should hopefully be stunning.
If we need to shorten the route, Zunderkopf can be omitted to save 300 m ascent, but this must be decided 5 km in, or the final 100 m climb to Säuling itself can be skipped if people are feeling especially tired, saving 1 km.
And now for some folklore (from German Wikipedia without citation, so take this with a pinch of salt):
Legend has it that Säuling's summit plateau is used by witches as a dance floor.
It is also said that the Devil himself tore down a pillar from Säuling and threw it towards Roßhaupten, but when the evening bells rang out, the stone fell straight to the ground, landing in front of the village. This monolith can still be visited today, and a cross has been set up within it.
While we won’t have time to visit Roßhaupten, we can definitely make like witches and dance upon the plateau. Depending on time, I may also go for a swim in Alpsee at the end.
Meet by the ticket machines near platform 34 by 06:55. That is when I will buy the
ticket, if you are late then you will have to buy your own. We will
travel with a Bayern Ticket, which will cost around €12 (please bring coins).
