Description
The event is now limited to 7 participants due to hut reservation. Anyone remaining on the list could still have the chance to participate in case a spot opens up.
NOTE: JOINING THIS HIKE MEANS YOU ARE COMMITTING YOURSELF TO BEING THERE! Please do not block places in the list and that you are sure you will go.
Here is a short overview with additional details to come later:
- challenging 3 day hut hike in beautiful Karwendel
- first day: mittenwald to Karwendelhaus, 1200m and 18km
- second day: Karwendelhaus to Hallerangerhaus, 1500m up/down and 19km
-third day: Hallerangerhaus to Innsbruck, take gondola down to city, 1500m up/1000m down and 14km
- overnight hut stay in shared bedroom (mehrbettzimmer) with half board (dinner+breakfast), 60-70 eur per night for DAV members slightly more if not, mummy sack (Hüttenschlafsack) required, I’ll ask for a small prepayment in advance in case of cancelation/no-show
- this hike should be difficult and so not something for beginners, will require hiking experience.
Update 18-Mar-23:
- Due to trek difficuly, it will be required to have minimum 3 T3 hikes done or T4 hike with positive feedback. There are some areas to cross using security ropes; also plan to go through a short exposed section to the top of Birkkarspitze for a nice break :)
- In case we are up for it, we can take the variants.
- Will go together as a group with a normal hiking pace, not fast. In case you have concerns on pace, please contact me.
Update: 24-Apr-23
20€ prepayment required from each buddy to cover the hut cancellation fee in case you drop out last minute due to being sick or something else. I will reimburse the money on arrival in case you go or there is a replacement buddy.
Good to know
- Please message me with your cell phone number so I can create a WhatApp group.
- Please inform yourself regarding individual hut requirements/rules.
- Additional items not to forget: travel documents, DAV card, mummy sack, towel, house shoes, snacks, rain gear, enough cash for travel tickets and hut costs.
- Every hiker must have their own means of navigation using map (paper or digital).
- As this is a hike that requires more planning due to the overnight hut stays, do not select to join the hike unless you are confident you are able to join, and please give notice in far advace in case you must cancel (2 weeks or earlier please).
- Bring travel documents for border crossing
Travel:
- Friday 21Jul: Take the train from Munich HBF=>Garmisch=>Bus 9608 to Isarhorn, Mittenwald (tickets can be split for those who do not have the 49eur ticket)
- Sunday 23-Jul: Hafelekarbahn/Seegrubenbahn (Nordkettenbahnen) - 26.4 eur tbc => walk/take bus to Innsbruck train station => train to Münich (details to be given later but we will try to be back in munich before 9)
IMPORTANT: I am not a professional guide. Participants are responsible for themselves, must do their own research about the route, and must be able to navigate by themselves (in case the groups split for some reason, for example).
If you have had a NO SHOW in the last year, do not join the hike.

Dear all, I’m really really looking forward to this hike! Today looking at photos of the Gjaidsteig 😁 As updated today, a 20€ pre-payment is required. If you are on the list, I assume you are 100% sure you will go. Therefore please for those who have not yet, send me an email with your number for the group chat, and how you would like to pay, PayPal best. :) I need to get all this sorted out before June as I’ll be off the grid. Thx!
