Above the car-free sun terrace Melchsee-Frutt, the snowshoe trail on the Gumm promises magnificent views of the Central Swiss and Bernese Alps.
Full description: https://www.schweizmobil.ch/en/snowshoe-trekking/trails-e/route-0791.html and https://www.schweizmobil.ch/en/snowshoe-trekking/trails-e/route-0790.html - we’ll combine these two routes. Note that the route marked on the Hiking Buddies website is only an approximation, the snowshoe trail doesn't always follow summer trails.
Pace: We’ll try to go at a moderate pace and don’t take too many breaks. No prior experience with snowshoes is required, but a good level of fitness is.
Starting point: Stöckalp, bottom station of the gondola (https://goo.gl/maps/hT4rZMzqqsfp5oAd7). We’ll then take the gondola and start hiking from Frutt. The return ticket for the gondola with Halbtax costs 18.50 CHF. For people taking public transport, we’ll meet at Zurich HB shortly before the train departure.
How to get there: Train (IR 70 direction Ebikon) departs at 08:10 from Zurich HB, platform 6. We then need to change to bus, train and bus (I think there are some track works in Luzern, so there is no direct train from Zurich to Luzern currently).
Snowshoes: This is a snowshoe hike, so having snowshoes is required. Rental of snowshoes should be possible at the top station of the gondola, in Frutt: https://skischulefrutt.ch/rental/vermietung/schneeschuhe/. This website offers advance booking, so I strongly recommend doing this if you don’t have your own snowshoes. You can also rent snowshoes in Zurich.
What to take: Snowshoes and poles (see point above), hiking boots, enough food (we'll do a picnic lunch somewhere along the way) and water, proper winter hiking clothes (layers!), optionally: warm drinks.
Disclaimer: I'm not a guide - everyone hikes at their responsibility and risk.
