The Hike


From Morgartendenkmal in Canton Zug, we leave towards Morgarten Letziturm and Morgartenhaus / Schlachtkapelle Morgarten in Canton Schwyz.
Then we go up to Morgartenberg (1’279m) via Alpwirtschaft Rapperli (Schwyz side). At the top we have a view of the alps and the Agerisee. We go down on the other side (Zug side)

Good to know
The Battle of Morgarten took place on 15 November 1315, when troops of Schwyz, supported by their allies of Uri and Unterwalden, ambushed an Austrian army under the command of Leopold I, Duke of Austria on the shores of Lake Ägeri, in the territory of Schwyz.

After a brief close-quarters battle, the Austrian army was routed, with numerous slain or drowned. The Swiss victory consolidated the League of the Three Forest Cantons, which formed the core of the Old Swiss Confederacy.

Transportation


Laurence and I will be going by car we can pick-up 3 people, either in Berikon-Widen at 8:20am, or in Birmensdorf, ZH - meeting time: 8:30am.

 (We have 1 place left. CHECK THE MESSAGES BELOW AS OTHER PARTICIPANTS MIGHT OFFER ALTERNATIVES.)

Otherwise I have indicated how to come by train from Zurich HB to Morgartendenkmal (via Zug and Oberägeri).

Pace
This is a slow pace hike. Some people might come with dogs.

(Slow Pace means 300/350m vertical ascent per hour ; 1km length in 30min)

Food
Warm drinks in isotherm bottle might be a good idea as it will be around 5-16 degrees.

Snacks for the road - expect the hike to be finished by 1:30pm.


Weather

Forecast for now is mixed, but mostly sunny.
Temperatures around 5 degrees as we start, rising to 16 degrees around lunch time and the afternoon.
So make sure you take a few layers, as well as protection for the rain in case of.
The path might be muddy at times, you might want to have hiking poles/sticks.

Cancellations

Up to 12 hours before the event (before 9:20pm Friday), you can unregister on hiking buddies website.

In case you change your mind in the 12 hours before the start of the event (after 9:20pm Friday), please let me know by WhatsApp/text message (+41 78 647 8829), so I won’t mark you as “no-show”. No-show means you will be restricted to participate in future hikes.

Safety notices



YOU MUST HAVE proper hiking boots with a good grip, headlamp, warm clothes, rain protection / sun screen, at least 1,5L of water, and food for snacks along the way.
