Description

This is not a beginner hike, but also not super hard, and we can keep a normal pace, no need to rush.

There will be some remaining snow on the way, and probably plenty of snow around the peak. If you want to join, you should have already done hikes of comparable length and height difference. If you are unsure about joining, please send a message to me.

A DAV membership is recommended, because of the included insurance for mountain hiking.

We are going to take the Train leaving at 7:13, and we'll arrive in Garmisch at 8:24, and start hiking from there. We'll hike via the Stepberg-Alpensteig route to Stepberg-alm, and up to Kramerspitz from there.

On the way down we'll go take an extensive break at Stepberg-alm, and then hike down via the Gelbes Gwänd  route to Untergrainau. From there we'll take the Schienenersatzverkehr bus to Garmisch, and then the train back to Hauptbahnhof. The bus from Untergrainau leaves ca. every 45 minutes, at 16:35, 17:18, 17:50, etc.. We should plan to reach the 17:18 or 17:50.

Alternatively if we miss a bus, or want to avoid it, we could hike the way back to Garmisch, which would add ca. 2.5-3 km to the route.

What to bring:

  • Have a good fitness level
  • Waterproof Hiking boots
  • Flexible hiking clothes, it will be quite warm and sweaty going up, but it might get much colder higher up and going down.
  • Food and Water for a whole day of hiking (ca. 2 Liter Water recommended), don't rely on taking a break at the hug.
  • Charged smartphone (and my number is +49 152 28632131, in case you get lost, or fail to find the group in the morning).
  • If possible have some rain equipment, there might be traces of rain towards the end of the hike.

Good to have equipment

  • First aid kit
  • Extra battery / Powerbank for your phone
  • Hiking poles
  • Spare socks (if your feet get wet)
  • Crampons and gaiters, to handle deep snow and icy parts. Gaiters will probably be useful near the top. Crampons are not really useful I think.

Cost per person

  • Werdenfels Ticket: Between 11 and 14 Euros per person (Bring Coins!)
