Salzburg is the furthest east you can reach within the Alps on a Bayern Ticket. From there, we will head west, climbing mountain passes and getting fantastic views of lakes and far-off mountains.
There are several options for this ride, let me know in the comments which route you'd like to take.
Routes
High route (134 km, 2410 m asc.): From Salzburg, head south up the Salzach river to Hallein (16.8 km). Climb up to Bad Dürnberg (370 m at 9% over 4.0 km). Continue climbing up Roßfeld (745 m at 8%, mostly 10%, over 9 km). Enjoy spectacular views from 1540 m over the Salzburger Land along the 1 km ridge. Descend into Berchtesgaden (-1027 m at -10% over 10.6 km). From here there are hourly trains in case an escape is needed (requires Bayern Ticket). The next leg is 5 km to Königsee, where there should be an opportunity to swim and take a break. It is 30.8 km downhill back to Salzburg via Berchtesgaden (totalling 79.0 km, 1480 m asc.), or we can press on to the 1150 m Hirschbichl Pass (700 m over 21.2 km). Now go down the hill to Weißbach bei Lofer (-516 m at -8% over 6.5 km). Head north down the valley for 9.6 km to Lofer. See below for the continuation from Lofer.
Low route (98.0 km, 1090 m asc.): From Salzburg, head south-east past the airport to cross the border at Bad Reichenhall, after 22.0 km. Climb up to the Reichenhaller Talkessel (5 km over 240 m), then drop down the other side to Schneizlreuth (-190 m at -8% over 2.4 km). Follow the road up the valley to Lofer (17.5 km, 500 m ascent, 400 m descent).
From Lofer, head west to Erpfendorf, north to Kössen, and west again past Walchsee to Oberaudorf. This leg is 49.7 km, with 350 m ascent and 500 m descent. If you still want more distance, the extension to Bayrischzell via Schmiedtal adds 29.9 km and 500 m ascent to the total route (low route: 126.6 km, 1600 m asc.), or the extension to Bayrischzell via Tatzelwurmstraße adds 22.0 km and 730 m ascent to the total route (high route: 158.9 km, 3280 m asc.).
