Route: Weisstannen - Batöni waterfalls - Lavtinasattel (Wildsee) - Pizolhütte. From Pizolhütte we take two chair lifts and one cable car down to Wangs (16 CHF with halbtax). The chairlift from Pizolhütte to Gaffia operates until 16.00 but to be safe I think we should aim at arriving there no later than 15.00 (6h 15 min from start time). If it is too much snow or too rainy/slippery, we will only go a bit longer than to the Batöni waterfalls and then back to Weisstannen (c. 10 km and only c. 700m elevation gain) which also is a nice, but not so challenging, hike.
The Weisstannen valley is home for Ibex and eagles so bring your binoculars if you have!
More information of the route can be found here: https://pizol.com/sommer-erleben/wandern/32/weisstannen-lavtinasattel-pizolhuette#/
Pace: Moderate. We'll try to have a continuous pace, with some breaks, but not too many. This is a hike which is not suitable for beginners given the elevation gain of c. 1,700m (only 500 m descend though).
Starting point: Weisstannen, Oberdorf (bus stop), but for people who go from Zurich we can meet at the platform (9) shortly before the train departure.
How to get there: Train IC 3, direction Chur, departs at 07:07 from Zurich HB, platform 9, arrives in Sargans 08:03. Bus B 433, direction Heiligkreuz (Mels), departs 08.06 from Sargans, Bahnhof, Stop F, arrives 08:12 in Melz, Pizolpark. Bus B 432 departs 08:12 and arrives 08:41 in Weisstannen, Oberdorf.
How to get back: Chairlift and cable car from Pizolhütte to Wangs, Pizolbahn. From Wangs, Pizolbahn there are busses every 30 minute, and dependent on timing it either takes 1h and 10 min or 1h and 32 min to come back to Zurich HB.
What to take: Regular hiking equipment, in particular hiking boots with good grip (note that there likely will be sections with snow); food - we’ll have picnic lunch, water; sunscreen; sunglasses; rain jacket.
Disclaimer: I'm not a guide - everyone hikes at their responsibility and risk. There are some steep and exposed sections on this trail. Please read the detailed description of the hike via the link posted above.
