Description

Initially I planned to wait until next summer to do this trip in reverse (from Walchensee to Garmisch) but since there are some buddies here suspecting whether I am actually able to complete this in one day (which just means no sleep during the whole trip, not necessarily under 24 hours or that we can’t sit down and eat) and even report to the admins, now I am also doubting myself. So why not just do it once again just to make sure? :)

I would like to start from Walchensee this time so that we would end up in Garmisch in which the train connections back to Munich will be available almost most of the time (at least every hour during 0500 - 2300) so that we don’t have to detour because of worrying about losing the last train / bus. For those who would like to go on this journey with me, you should take the train RB6 to Garmisch from Pasing Pl. 4 departing at 0638, then taking 2 buses (9618, 9608) arriving Walchensee Herzogstandbahn at 0903 and we will start right away. Based on the experience from last trip (this route in reverse), I expect the hike to take around 24 hours (Including breaks) so we reach Garmisch at 9am the day after (we have 14 hours of buffer till we miss the last train from Garmisch I guess that’s more than enough, just don’t fall asleep at the middle and we are fine). There will be no opening huts along the route, so you will need to think about how to prepare food and drinks for the entire trip.

Good to know

Due to the suspicions I’ve got and concerns from admins about me abusing the system, I will have to treat the actual route we would eventually do quite seriously: If you need to detour and descend to the towns nearby (Eschenlohe, Farchant, Ohlstadt etc.) then you will need to create your own event with that route you did and I would remove you from the event; If I myself cannot do it, I would simply not upload any photos so to not get any points from this (Please don’t upload anything under this event in this case, but rather make your own event and upload your track). I will also upload my own tracking as a comment here after the trip. ( I mean, I have to make it explicit because I literally got emails for that matter, not that I really care so much about those points. So thanks for understanding).

You would probably like to bring the following (non-exhaustive list):
  • Water
  • Phone with GPX loaded
  • Charger
  • Head lamp (!) (Make sure its charged, bring 2 if you want, it will most likely be on from 19 to 6)
  • Food / Drinks /MRE / Snacks for the whole day (literally)
  • Gaiters
  • Spikes
  • Hiking sticks
  • Camping stove and gas cartridges
  • 49€ Ticket

In case a screenshot from Strava isn't convincing enough, heres an interactive report from Garmin in which you can see where I am during the hike given a time (even heart rate): https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/12754529842 I took the train at 9am instead so to get a little bit more sleep and as a result I started the hike from Herzogstandbahn station at around 1150. My watch ran out of battery after 24 hour of tracking so the track stopped around 3km away from Garmisch train station. Luckily all the peaks and elevations of the planned route are captured. If you have more concerns / questions about this hike or anything else, feel free to write me and I will try my best to answer. Have a good day
