Description

Warning: This is a really lengthy and a fast-paced hike! Please make sure to read the complete description! While it doesn't have many technical difficulties, you should have good stamina, and a fast walking pace so that we can move very quickly through the flat parts.

The way up on the Kälbersteig is quite steep. On the way down we'll go down via the Reintal, which includes some exposure and a part with ropes to hold onto.

Note that I'm strongly considering starting and ending (or maybe one of those) directly from the Garmisch Partenkirchen train station. That would bring the total distance up to 27 km.

Current weather forecast predicts some rain, for Saturday. So please be prepared for this. Only a significant probability of thunderstorms would be a reason to cancel this hike.

For the way down, it might be interesting to take the trail going around/above the Klamm instead of going through the Klamm a second time.

We'll take train to Garmisch, that leaves at 7:13am from München Hauptbahnhof, and arriving at 8:24 in Garmisch.

Possible trains back from Garmisch leave at 16:07, 17:05, 17:35, etc. (ca. every 30 minutes there's a connection in the evening).

What to bring:

  • Have a good fitness level
  • Fast walking speed
  • Waterproof Hiking boots
  • Rain gear, meaning a rain jacket, and a rain cover for your backpack
  • Flexible hiking clothes, it will be quite warm and sweaty going up, but you might get wet and cold in the rain.
  • Food and Water for a whole day of hiking (ca. 2 Liter Water recommended), don't rely on taking a break at the hut.
  • Charged smartphone (and my number is +49 152 28632131, in case you get lost, or fail to find the group in the morning).

Good to have equipment

  • First aid kit
  • Extra battery / Powerbank for your phone
  • Hiking poles
  • Spare socks (if your feet get wet)

Cost per person

  • Bayern Ticket: Between 11 and 15 Euros per person (Bring Coins!) (or Werdenfels ticket, if we are sure to walk everything directly from the Garmisch train station)
Good to know
