Description

Unless we did several hikes together already, please send me a message immediately if you join this hike! I'll remove people from the hike who I don't know well and didn't send a message, or who don't seem fit enough.

I expect anyone joining this hike, to have a DAV membership, or some comparable insurance that covers mountain rescues.

This is a very long hike, but most of the path is not very difficult so we can move very quickly for most of the hike. We can take a shorter break at Schachenhaus on the way up, and the main break will be at Meiler huette. There is also a possibility to go to the Bockhuette on the way down, as that would be only a tiny detour.

I expect anyone joining this hike, to be able to navigate the route themselves. So you should have and know how to use a paper map or an app on your phone to navigate.

Approximate timeline (note that the times are meant as maximum times, meaning we should strongly consider turning back early if we are slower than this on the way up):

  • 7:13 Train leaves from Muenchen Hauptbahnhof, arrives 8:24 in Garmisch Partenkirchen
  • ca. 8:30: Start hiking from Garmisch Partenkirchen train station
  • ca. 12:00: Reach Schachenhaus
  • ca. 14:00: Reach Meilerhuette
  • ca. 15:00: Start hiking down from Meilerhuette
  • by ca. 19:00: Back at Garmisch Partenkirchen train station.  Possible trains back from Garmisch leave at 18:07, 18:35, 19:07, 19:36, 20:05, 21:07, 22:07, 23:07 (last train).

What to bring:

  • Have a very good fitness level
  • Very fast walking speed, if everyone agrees we can run on the long gravel road down through Reintal, but that's completely optional.
  • Waterproof Hiking boots
  • Good sun cream, and other means of sun protection, like a sun hat, or a baseball cap.
  • There is a chance of some rain in the evening, so bring your rain gear, meaning a rain jacket, and a rain cover for your backpack
  • Flexible hiking clothes, it will be quite warm and sweaty going up, but you might get wet and cold during the hike.
  • Food and Water for a whole day of hiking (at least 2 Liter Water recommended), don't rely on taking a break at any of the huts.
  • Some means of navigating the route, either a paper map (like DAV 4/3 Wetterstein Ost), or a phone with a hiking navigation app.
  • Charged smartphone (and my number is +49 152 28632131, in case you get lost, or fail to find the group in the morning).

Good to have equipment

  • First aid kit
  • Paper map of the area, I'd recommend the "DAV 4/3 Wetterstein Ost" map.
  • Extra battery / Powerbank for your phone
  • Hiking poles
  • Spare socks (if your feet get wet)

Cost per person

  • Werdenfels Ticket: Between 10 and 15 Euros per person (Bring Coins!)

Good to know
