Description

Birkkarspitze is the highest peak of the Karwendel mountains. Needless to say, the panoramic view is fantastic if the mountain let's you summit it on a day with good weather. This a day trip without the need to stay at a hut. 

Route: Unlike most people we will neither bike the long way from Scharnitz nor walk the other long way from Eng, but use the AFAIK shortest, less well known but very varied route from Hinterriß through Johannestal and Kleiner Ahornboden to Karwendelhaus. From there we will also not use the overcrowded mountain highway through Schlauchkar but instead first ascent the Westliche Ödkarspitze via Brendelsteig (partially secured by ropes) and continue on the ridge to Birkkarspitze. For the descent we use the Schlauchkar (screeing possible) and stop at the Karwendelhaus to greet Marco's group and have dinner. Then we return the same way to the car.

Technical Difficulty: This hike is NOT suitable for beginners. It involves some exposed climbing (UIAA I). You have to be absolutely surefooted and no fear of heights. You should have above average pace (>500m gain/hour) and stamina, and walking speed of about 6km/h in the rather flat valley. We might run some parts downhill.

Provisory schedule: We'll start in Munich at around 6:30. Don't make plans for the evening. Estimates incl. buffers:
  • 8:00 arrival parking lot
  • 10:30 Karwendelhaus (refill)
  • 12:30 Westliche Ödkarspitze
  • 14:00 Birkkarspitze (break)
  • 16:00 Karwendelhaus (lunch)
  • 18:30 back at car
  • 20:00 arrival in Munich

Transport: We will go by car as the starting point is not easily accessible by public transport. The driver(s) may require passengers to pay in advance. The shared costs include the toll fee (3,5€/car). Please read the car instructions carefully. If the hike or lift is cancelled or postponed, the drivers must reimburse the prepaid payments. Otherwise a passenger dropping out before departure must only be reimbursed if the driver can find a replacement. Car drivers must contact me first if they drop out.

Legal disclaimer: This is not a guided tour. I merely organize the trip to the starting point with like-minded, qualified, properly equipped and reliable persons. Every participant must be able to navigate her/himself on the suggested route. If you join, you acknowledge that hiking is dangerous, you are fully responsible for yourself and that you have sufficient insurance (DAV, Bergrettung or similar).

Good to know

On the day before the hike, please check whether it was postponed (due to weather) and check your emails for further informations. I'll send you an invitation to a WhatsApp group.

Things to bring (mandatory):

  • hiking (!) boots
  • water (min. 2l, reservoir recommended)
  • snacks (there is no hut at the peak)
  • your passport or ID (!) because we are passing the borders
  • charged smartphone, emergency no 112 saved, optionally powerbank
  • sun glasses, sunscreen
  • rain jacket and head lamp (just in case)
  • optional: hiking poles, gaiters for screeing, gloves for scrambling

Note: Please unjoin the event well in advance, if you don't want to come. You cannot unjoin the event when it is starting in less than 12 hours.
