Scenic hike which passes through the base of Trettachspitze, Hochfrottspitze and Maedelegabel.

The traverse from Windengundkopf to Waltenbergerhaus requires surefootedness and head for heights. Even though the path is never difficult, it is narrow and exposed at some places. 

Reaching the start point: There are slow but regular regional trains to Oberstdorf, from where one could take a bus to Birgsau, the starting and the end point of the hike. Note that the bus ride is not included in Bayern or Servus ticket. If possible, carpool is preferable for this hike.

We did the route in the opposite direction, however, I did not find any clear advantages/disadvantages for any of the two directions.

Ascent: From the Birgsau bus stop continue for 150m on a paved road before turning left to a mountain road. Follow the mountain road until Einödsbach. From here the path becomes a bit narrow and steep. Continue the path along the stream (we never cross the stream, and stay on the left of it). After a while, we reach a zig zag path, some of these sections are secured by cable and metal bridges. After the zigzag, we enter a large plateau with the views of Waltenbergerhaus, Bockkarkopf and Mädelegabel. Follow the gentle ascent to the hut from here.

After the hut, the route becomes narrow and exposed. One must have a head for heights in order to do this traverse. We also need to cross a gravel field, which is technically not too difficult, but because of gravel, there are not clear footholds, and at some places use of hand for support is necessary. 

Wildengundkopf is a grassy summit, which offers great views of Trettachspitze. 

Descent: The descent from Wildengundkopf is easy but steep at places. On the way, we also encounter a non serviced hut, which sometimes offers self serviced drinks.

Easier variants: One can also avoid the traverse, and instead do the easier hikes, e.g.,
