Route Information
1200 meters of elevation gain in 11 km seems steep, and indeed it is quite steep.
Wildengundkopf is a grassy mountain right at the base of Trettachspitze. There are nice views of Trettachspitze, Hochfrottspitze and Maedelegabel.
There are no huts on the way, however, instead of coming back via the same path, one could do the traversal to Waltenbergerhaus, which is a bit more challenging.
Reaching the start point: The best way to reach the start point is to reach Oberstdorf, and then take the bus 7 from there to Birgsau. The bus is not covered by Bayern ticket, and costs approximately 6.5 Euro for return ticket. For a group of 10 or more people, there is a 50% discount.
Ascent: From the bus stop follow the main road for 50m before turning left to a mountain road. After another 200m take a sharp left turn. From here the route is pretty steep. Soon, you will see a large waterfall on the right side. We follow a series of steep zig-zags, and get closer and closer to the waterfall. Once we reach there, the forest part is over, and there lies the peak Einoedsberg. There is an unmanaged hut here, and one can refill the water.
Turn left and follow the very steep part. Sometimes the cows block this part of route either by standing there or by creating mud. Once we are over this part, we can already see Wildengundkopf. The path is more visible and easy to follow from here onwards. There is a small saddle point from where one can see many Allgaeu peaks including Hoefats. The route from the saddle point to the peak is narrow and steep but never exposed.
There is no cross at the peak, but there are amazing views of Trettachspitze, Hochfrottspitze and Madelegabel.
Descent: The same as ascent until Einoedsberg, from here one can turn left and take a steep and narrow path towards Einoedsabach. This part is T3, and can be quite slipper during or after rain. From Einoedsbach, the bus station is approximately 20 minutes via a gentle walk.
