Let´s go to Höhe Tauern this time and spend one night in wonderfully located Zittaerhütte. The Zittauer Hütte (2,328 m) in the Wildgerlostal directly on the Wildgerlossee is an alpine base in the hiking and alpine paradise of the westernmost part of the Hohe Tauern National Park. Unique is the view of the three thousand meter peaks Wildkarspitze and Wildgerslosspitze and their glacier! First day we drive to Krimml and we climb up along the Krimml waterfalls, the highest waterfalls in Europe. Really beautiful and impressive! Then we continue along the long Achental valley till we get to Tauernhaus. The path leads us past the Rainbach waterfall on a steep wide forest path. Continue on a mountainous, well-marked forest trail through a large, cool spruce and stone pine forest. Over huge imposing mountain pine fields you get to a plateau to the lake with a beautiful view of the Rainbachtal. It surrounds us a wild and romantic nature, the mountains are within your reach. We climb the Rainbachscharte at an altitude of 2720 m from the Rainbachsee and then descend another valley on the other side of the mountain to the Zittauer hut at an altitude of 2330 m. We spend there the night. On Sunday after a good breakfast we climb the Rosskopf (2845m). The panorama from Rosskopf is great. Reichenspitze group on the southwest. They are close and arranged in a nice parade. Looking southwards the first high summits of Hohe Tauern can be seen. They start with the Riesenferner group (Hochgall) and continue with the Venediger group (Roetspitze, Dreiherrnspitze, Grosser Geiger, Grossvenediger). From behind even some peaks of the Glockner group can be seen. Towards the northwest, you only see many lower summits of Kitzbuehler Alps and even a few of the eastern Karwendel.
Short descent on the Rosskarscharte and on into the Rosskar. The Rosskarlacke is a good place to take a break. Continue down to the Keesboden, where the ascent begins again. After about 200 hm ascent you reach the Richter hut where we can have lunch break. We finally go back down to Achental till we reach back Krimml.
