Biberkopf (2599 m) is located in the main ridge of Allgäu alps on the border between Germany and Austria. It's fascinating shape makes it one of the most impressive mountains in German Alps. Geologically, the summit body is made up of intensively folded dolomite, which was pushed onto marls. The very pure dolomite causes the low vegetation of the mountain, as the content of clay minerals in the weathering product of the rock is too low for sufficient soil formation. In contrast, a rich flora can be found after the transition into the marl layers [wikipedia].
This hike has a lot of beautiful scenes but it's not an easy hike you need to be surefooted and no fear of heights.
Ascent: From Lechleiten parking lot, the path goes on steep grassy meadows. Soon you will arrive at Hundskopfhuette at around 1800m. The steep serpentine path quickly leads to a saddle point where the vegetation finishes and rocky terrain starts. There are some exposed sections from here on and it requires UIAA I scrambling. People with fear of heights should not try this summit. There are cables sometimes on tricky sections and traffic jams are common on such places. The path is very well marked with red dots. Soon you will arrive at the summit and the views of peaks all around are stunning.
Descent: Follow the same last path from the summit to bifurcation where you see a signpost towards Rappenseehuette. There you need to traverse a very steep rocky terrain for a very long time. The path often goes on steep gravel, you need to be very careful here as any slip cab be fatal. After walking for a long time you will encounter an exit to the left, if you are exhausted or not feeling to continue to Rappensee, you can consider this option. Otherwise you can continue further where you have to start ascent again on steep terrain. There you will see a signpost towards Rappensee, the path is very well marked and soon you will arrive at Rappensee.
Rappensee is one of the most impressive lakes in German alps. Water is extremely cold because of it's altitude. The hut is 10 minutes from the lake. From there you can follow an easy path which goes through a steep gorge. From there the walk is mostly flat and gentle and you will arrive soon at the parking.
