Zugspitze (2962 m) is the highest mountain of Germany. There are 5 official routes to Zugspitze:
1. Reintal from Garmisch-Partenkirchen (T4, I)
2. Gatterl from Ehrwald (T3, I)
3. Stops from Ehrwald (T4, A/B, I)
4. Hoellental from Hammersbach (T3, C, II)
5. Jubliaumsgrat (T6, C/D, III)
Ascent: For this route we chose the Höllental route to go up. The route starts from Hammersbach, in the beginning you have to follow a broad forest road to Höllentalklamm. Then continue towards Höllentalangerhütte via Höllentalklamm. You have to pay 5 EUR to enter the klamm (2 EUR if you are DAV member). From the hut to the klettersteig is easy hike.
The entry point of the klettersteig has a ladder followed by some hooks which you have to traverse (see pictures for more details). Then a steep hike takes you to the glacier. You need crampons on the glacier as the glacier is quite steep at some places. There is some gap between the glacier and the 2nd klettersteig, so you have to be careful here. The final part is on B/C klettersteig all the way to the summit.
Descent: Follow the ridge then the path diverts take the left one to Knorhutte. Then the steep klettersteig (A) takes you to the platue. From there easy path to Knorhutte - Gatterl - Ehrwald. Path is marked and not technically difficult.
