Gehrenspitze (2163 m) is the third highest mountain in Tannheim group. There are three routes to the summit: Normal route, West ridge route and East ridge route. Here we describe the complete east ridge route. An alternative route that skips the initial part of the ridge is also possible.
Ascent: The ascent can be divided into the following sections:
From parking lot to Feuerköpfle: From the parking lot follow the road for a short time and turn left after a ski shop (there are signs for Kostarieskapelle). The path is very well marked till Kostarieskapelle and goes through dense forest. From Kostarieskapelle the path is difficult to find and there are no signs from now on to Grosse Gehrenspitze. So orientation skills are very important. The path starts right behind Kostarieskapelle and goes steep through dense forest but always close to the forest road. Soon you will arrive at Feuerköpfle, there is no summit cross only two benches. Views are already amazing from here.
From Feuerköpfle to Blachenspitze: From Feuerköpfle the paths continues in the dense forest and always upwards towards the ridge. Before Turejöchl, you have to find your way through dense bushes. There is an orange pole at the peak. From there you can either go on the ridge (grade II-III) or bypass it on the left. This part has very steep grass, some of us used ice axe here. Soon you will arrive at a saddle point just below Blachenspitze. There it's better to ascend from the right side to the peak. Ice axe will give you additional safety on the steep grass. When the grass is moist it can be very slippery. There are many possible ways up. All are exciting and exposed.
From Blachenspitze to Kleine Gehrenspitze: From Blachenspitze always follow the ridge or sometimes a bit to the right of the ridge. There are some sections where you have to descend on exposed rock (grade II). Surefootedness and experience in such terrains are absolutely necessary here. Just before the summit the path is mostly on very steep grass.
From Kleine to Grosse Gehrenspitze: The descent from Kleine Gehrenspitze is very steep and a mistake here is certainly fatal. Once you crossed this section the next section is on the ridge which is not exposed and flat. Just before the peak, you have again very steep grass to ascend. Ice axe again would help you.
Descent: Descent through normal route and always marked with red arrows and dots. In the beginning goes through steep rock before turns left on steep gully. A helmet is recommend in this part of the route. Soon you have to traverse steep grassy sections but not so difficult and you will arrive at Gehrenjoch. You can quickly run up to Schneidspitze adding one more summit before proceeding to the hut. From hut path is always marked.
German description of this route is available here.

An ice axe can be very helpful in the steep grass, especially when it is moist.
Never attempt this route in wet conditions. Only attempt this route when there were at least 3 dry sunny days before.
