Waxenstein mountain range includes the following peaks from East to West:

  • Manndl (1889 m)
  • Kleiner Waxenstein (2136 m)
  • Mittagscharte (2045 m)
  • Zwölferkopf (2232 m)
  • Großer Waxenstein (2277 m), the highest one and the most visited peak in Waxenstein mountain range

The traverse of the Waxenstein mountains is rarely climbed and only done by experienced mountaineers, you have to be comfortable in climbing III up and down in exposed terrains. An even more challenging route is to traverse the whole Waxensteinkamm

Ascent: Note that the GPX uploaded here is the approximate path, good orientation skills are required on the pathless track. The ascent can be divided into the following parts:

From Hammersbach to Manndl: From Hammersbach parking lot, follow the direction towards Waxensteinhütte (blue signs on the path). Soon you will arrive at Mittagagsschlucht gorge there you turn left towards Mittagskar. From here the signposts disappear and you have to follow the stone cairns towards Manndl. Pine trees on the left make a very good reference point, as you always stay at the edge between the tree-line and rocky steep terrain. There are stone cairns and green iron bars to guide you to Manndl.

From Manndl to Kleiner Waxenstein: From Manndl, you can either follow the chimney as described here or follow the pink stripes on the bushes before arriving at the East ridge of Kleiner Waxenstein. From here you always have to stay on the ridge. After some grade II scrambling, you will arrive at Kleiner Waxenstein.

From Kleiner Waxenstein to Zwölferkopf: From Kleiner Waxenstein, you can rappel two times before arriving at Mittagscharte. You need 50m rope. From Mittagsscharte you have to follow the normal route to Zwölferkopf which is marked with red dots.

From Zwölferkopf to Großer Waxenstein: From Zwölferkopf, you always have to stay on the ridge. There is a small grade 3 section which you have to go down. People smaller than 180 cm, need extra effort to find foothold ;-) Then you cross the ridge on left or right, you have to use your own judgement before arriving at a rappel point. After rappel, you have another grade 3 section just below the peak.

Descent: Follow the normal route from Großer Waxenstein to Höllentalangerhütte then further to Hammersbach.
