Kampenwand (1,664 m) is one of the most visited mountains in Chiemgau Alps. It has the largest summit cross in Bavarian alps. The summit cross was erected in 1950 to commemorate Chiemgau victims of the two world wars. In 2003, a solar system was established for the lightening of the cross. The illustration of the cross takes place on a few days per year.
Ascent: The hike starts from Aschau Bahnof. If you plan to go by car, you can park your car at Kampenwandbahn parking lot (5 EUR parking fee). The route initially follows the asphalt road which is also used by mountain bikers. From Maisalm, the trail starts to become narrower and steeper. From Kampenwandhuette, the trail becomes very steep and requires some scrambling to the summit. Sure footedness and no fear of heights are absolutely necessary for this section. Some exposed sections are secured with the cable.
Descent: From the peak follow the same trail as ascent. From Kampenwandhuette continue towards SonnenAlm, the trail becomes again wide and less steep. From SonnenAlm, you can follow the ski slope all the way to the starting point.
Note that the tour can also be done in the reverse direction.
