Sonntagshorn (1,961 m) is the highest mountain in the Chiemgau Alps. The international border between between Bavaria and Salzburg runs on the summit which rises southeast of Ruhpolding and southwest of Inzell. The name Sonntagshorn has nothing to do with Sunday but rather comes from Sonnendach, "sun roof". The summit structure looks like a roof from the southern side which is very strongly irradiated by the sun. Let´s go to Heutal valley and catch this beautiful summit! We start from Heutalbauern next to the road a few minutes into the valley floor and we  go further along the summer path in an easterly direction. Our trail leads and in a pleasant slope through some clearings and intervening forest belts to the area of the Hochalm. The farmed hut we leave right and go past the chapel to the northeast in a hollow on the saddle between Peitingköpfl and Sonntagshorn. Now north between the last trees in hairpin bends on the summit slope and we finally reach the Sonntagshorn! We stand at the highest point of the Chiemgau Alps. The panorama is absolutely impressive in great weather! We could enjoy the fantastic view of the Berchtesgaden Alps (Watzmann, Hochkalter just to name some of them), Leoganger and Lofer Steinberg mountains, the Kaisergebirge mountains and the mountains south of Lake Chiemsee. Between two ridges in the south we could see the Kitzsteinhorn and directly behind the striking peaks of the Grossglockner. Here it is the potential of this summit in a photo: https://www.hoehenrausch.de/panoramabilder/bilder/gross/sonntagshorn8-720-25.jpg

The descent takes place in the area of the ascent track up to the alpine area of the Hochalm. If we still feel like it,  we could head to Peitingköpfl, which is also a beautiful scenic mountain so to make a pretty round tour!
