Kegelkopf (1960 m) gives you have the option to come very close to the mighty Höfats (Königin der Steilgrasberge). The views to the Allgäu Highalps from the top are fantastic. There is no cross at the peak but one of the highest rest benches of Germany.
There are no marked hiking trails leading up to the Kegelkopf, but only a hunter's path which is difficult to find. Therefore it is mostly climbed by locals. Like the other grass mountains of the Allgäu Alps, Kegelkopf has a very interesting botany, which can be compared with that of Höfats or Schneck, especially on the south-eastern ridge leading down to Krautersalpe.
Ascent: The route starts from Renksteg parking lot with a ~3Km walk to Christlesee on asphalt. You can skip this walk if you take the bus. From Christlesee continue to the waterfall (very crowded but the views are amazing). After the waterfall walk shortly on the narrow path in the forest before arriving to asphalt again to Jagdhaus. From Jagdhaus turn right towards waterfall and cross the stream over a bridge. From there on a narrow steep trail leads to the summit. The path is not marked but it has good visibility.
Descent: After the summit continue towards steep and exposed grassy terrain on the right. The path on the ridge is sometimes difficult to find. After long walk on the ridge, the path turns to the right towards Spielmannsau. From there, you can walk towards parking lot or take the bus.
Warning: Don't attempt this route in wet conditions.
